Live and NEVER Learn

You know that old saying Live and Learn? Well, I live and NEVER learn. Seems like when I am distracted by things my house goes to hell. Been writing quite a bit lately and getting ready to head out for Ellora's Cave's Romanticon and my mind is well...occupied. There is no room in my head for anything else, I reckon. At dinner time, the other evening, I put on water to boil pasta then headed back into my office to get a bit more wordage on the work in progress. I toodled along, typing away and suddenly I SMELLED something. I jumped up, dashed through the place and realized the house was filled with smoke. I'd completely forgotten the pot of water boiling on the stove. What a damn mess! I yanked the pot off the stove and started opening doors and windows to let the smoke out then went into the master bedroom. Mr. Regina was sprawled on the bed watching the news and I managed to say...hey, don't panic but I almost set the damn house on fire. He looks at me over the top of his 'readers' and goes...Damn, honey.
He was actually so calm about it, I began to realize that, to him, this was no cause for alarm. Just standard stuff.

Now I'd like to blame this on the fact that I write but truthfully, when we have lots of crap going on, it's super easy to screw up things. Most of my disasters are kitchen related but this could simply be due to the fact that I don't have a 'day job'. I've exploded eggs, burned stew (three or four pots last winter), forgotten to put meat out to thaw. What's really weird about that is that I'm normally not a 'kitchen klutz'. I am descended from a long line of superb southern cooks who would be rolling in their graves if they only knew of my recent screwups!

I'm chalking it up to distraction!

Summer...It's HERE

I woke up this morning, June 1, and realised that YES summer is here and half the year is gone. What the hell happened to those nice little New Year's Resolutions I made back when snow was on the ground and we were all freezing our rear ends off? I wanted to lose some weight. Okay, I've done some of that but not enough so that anyone would really notice. The big resolution however was to write at least a book a month. Ummmm. What the HELL was I thinking?

So far the number is four. Okay, that's not bad but it certainly isn't what I'd hoped for. Instead of writing steadily as I'd wanted that pesky 'real life' got completely in the way. Granted they were very big real life issues so I can life with that. So I reckon when next January rolls around I'll not be quite so ambitious. A little more realism is in order. There actually is nothing at all wrong with writing six books in a year or seven, is there. And yes, sometimes unexpected things happen in life and we have to deal. Dealing is what we DO, after all. In the end, we sigh, shake our heads at all that New Year optimism and do what must be done. There's no shame in that.

In other news, Drilled (April, EC) was named by the lovely Lila at Two Lips Reviews to receive their Reviewers Choice for the month of June. YAY!!!! What a great honor. Check it out HERE!

Off and Running

Somehow or other I managed to shake off those blues I suffered from all last week. The sun is shining and Texas temps are warmer than usual. Don't know if the weather shook me back to my old self but whatever it was...YAY! The good thing about bad moods, at least for me, is they usually go away and now I'm back and feeling frisky again.

This weekend I'm attending a mini-reunion with a bunch of sorority sisters. The whole thing came up unexpectedly but I'm really psyched. I haven't seen some of these women for ten years or so (some even longer). Funny thing, one night I was fiddling around on the computer and UP pops this facebook message. One of my sorority sisters figured out somehow who I was. Yes, I write under a pen name and don't have a facebook account in my real name so it was a huge surprise. Ended up finding out my sorority has a facebook page, I got on over there and BAM, instant connection with women I haven't seen in years. It's fun when things like that happen. Soooo, Friday night we're meeting for drinks and catching up. Can't wait. Have to say the social networking sites are pretty cool. So far I've caught up with these ladies and connected with old high school friends. Don't know HOW they found me under the pen name but hey, I'm okay with that. Just happy to reconnect.

In other news: Desiree Holt, Ciana Stone and myself are beginning a new Texas set series for Ellora's Cave. Just getting started on the project but I'm going... WOOT WOOT....over here. Still working on my cougar story and planning some others so things are hopping.

Don't forget to sign up for my super duper contest at Two Lips Reviews. At the end of the month I'll be giving away lots and lots of goodies to one lucky winner. Enter the contest HERE!
