What is it about vampires that are so appealing? I read my first vampire romance when Amanda Ashley started her series back in 1995 (or something like that) and I loved them. Craved them! I had a hard time back then finding vampire romances as there weren’t many authors writing in the paranormal genre at that time. When I discovered Christine Feehan I was so hooked. The Carpathians were such a unique take on vampires. Since then I’ve become a fan of all the various forms of immortals. Sherrilyn Kenyon’s Dark Hunters, J. R. Ward’s BDB, Susan Sizemore’s Vamps, and I just bought Lara Adrian’s Midnight Breeds. There’s so many vampire romance authors I can’t list them all.

Those are big shoes to fill, right? As an author it can be intimidating to venture into a genre you’ve never written before, but I did that very thing when I wrote A Diamond at Midnight. I always call myself a contemporary author who writes steamy. Trying my hand at something so different was scary! When I submitted ADAM to The Wild Rose Press, I was scared to death and positive I’d get rejected. Imagine my surprise when an editor at TWRP emailed me to tell me she thought ADAM was a smartly written, action packed story with an ending that brought tears to her eyes. WOW! I was so surprised. Does my contribution to the immortal world hold up? We’ll see August 6th. *Gulp*

Now for a few questions. What is it you love the most about those vamps? Is it the biting? (that is SO sexy) Is it that the heroes are more primitive and aggressive? Or is it the fast paced storylines that grab you and won’t let go? Maybe it’s a combination. Who are some of your favorite vampire romance authors? Give me your answers in the comments section for a chance to win a free download of A Diamond at Midnight!

Diamonique’s life is changed forever when she stumbles across Cain Reed on a dark, lonely New York street. With a single bite, she’s given immortality and shown unimaginable pleasure. But before she can explore eternal love his betrayal tears them apart.

One hundred years later, Cain is back to save her from a dark enemy. Rafael, the depraved leader of The Dominion, will stop at nothing to settle an ancient score between him and Cain. Caught in the middle, Diamonique will need to swallow her pride and rely on Cain if she’s to survive. But is she handing her trust over to the right immortal or is she merely trading one evil for another?

Hi Anne, I adore vampire books. Christine Feehan really turned me on to them with her first one, Dark Prince. She is one of my top 3 auto buys.
I loved the premise that the carpathians would walk into the sun rather become an evil killer of humans. I read all the other authors you mentioned except JD Robb and I only read Robb's first one. I will have to try another.
Why do I love them? They are a very stromy character, ready to sacrifice themselves for others(humans included). And they are sooooo sexy, hot, and dominant. Yet when they fall in love they are very protective and caring.
They have it all.
After reading your 3 Samhain books I am sure 'A Diamond at Midnight' will be great too.

You know, I hesitated about the whole vampire thing. Couldn't for the life of me figure out what was sexy about it. Several friends, years ago, told me to check out Linda Lael Miller's vampire stuff. I never did. Finally I gave in and started with the hot Carpathians. Ummm. Can I say hot?

Now I read the others that you mentioned Anne and I can't get enough. Love the BDB but I'm getting nervous about where Ward is taking the series.

Sorry this is long but I'm feelin' wordy today...lol. Like you, I just tried something new and yeah, scary as hell. I wrote my first shifter story Feral Moon not long ago and got an EC contract for it. It'll come out in December. The thing was...it just FLEW. I wrote this one in a week. Felt like I was unconscious writing the thing. I love every minute.

Can't WAIT for your release. Like everything you write, I know it'll be INCREDIBLE.

MUAH!

Ooops. My bad. I forgot to mention what I love about vamps. They are gritty, edgy, very dark heroes. There's almost a gothic feel to vamp stories and I can't get enough.

Tonya, if you like Sherrilyn's books you will probably like Christine Feehan's too.
Anne,I just wanted to add, that I am so looking forward to your vamp. book,I know it will be great just like all your others.

Hey Anne. Don't enter me in the contest, of course but I had to answer since I LOVE vampires so much! I love how primitive and dominant they are. Love how protective they are of the women they fall in love with. Mine. Doesn't get any sexier when they start thinking that way. Plus the biting is pretty damn sexy too. Can you say hot?

My favorties are Ward (although like Regina I'm nervous about the future of the books because they seem to have less and less romance), Kenyon, and Lara Adrian.

Cindy--Thanks for stopping by and thanks for the compliments on the blog and my stories! I really need to try Kresley Cole. I think I'd like her.

Tonya--Kenyon does such a great job with her Dark Hunters. I read my first one and couldn't stop til I'd read all of them.

Sandie--Thanks! *g* That dominant thing...yeah, that's hot. ;-)

Regina--You're shifter sounds like another winner. You're just wracking up the contracts, lady! Great going!

Kelley--yes! I love when they get all possessive. That's incredibly sexy.

Hey Anne! Cindy's very RIGHT ON about Kresley Cole. She's amazing. Check out her Immortals After Dark series!!! The lead off story was shorter but the rest of them are full length novels. Very hot stuff! She mixes in Vamps/Shifters and all sorts of immortal creatures.

I forgot to mention Kresley Cole. I just started reading her recently. I've read the first two full novels. I like her books too!

I have only read a couple of vampire books. I still like my contemps best. (sorry!)
But, I do like the agressive male who protects his mate at all costs.

I really don't understand my fascination with vampires but they are so interesting to read about because every author has a different yet similiar perspective on what vampires are like.

I love Michele Bardsley, Kersley Cole, MaryJanice Davidson, Laurell K. Hamilton, Charalaine Harris, Lynsay Sands, Kerrelyn Sparks and JR Ward. They all write about vampires but they see vampires in a differen yet similiar ways that make their novels so interesting to read.

Hi Anne,
The confidence! There's nothing sexier than cool (no pun intended) confidence in a man, er, vampire. Also, what's more alluring than the forbidden?

Charlaine Harris, Kerrelyn Sparks and MaryJanice Davidson are my favorites. I want to try Kresley Kole next.

Jodi--You need to try Feehan and Kenyon! You won't be sorry! LOL

ivette--there's that Kresley Cole again. I REALLY need to read her books!

Viola--I think you're right about the confidence. That is very sexy to me as well.

Hi, Anne, I'm a bit of a wimp, so I haven't read too many vamp books. So far I've mostly read ones that bring the funny, so Erin McCarthy's Vegas Vampires and Marta Acosta's Casa Dracula serieses come to mind. I've also read a couple more serious vamp stories (Shiloh Walker, one of Meljean Brook's short stories, etc.) but not many. I do agree with others who have said that the dominant yet protective heroes are pretty yummy, and in many of them, there's a very tortured hero, which has its own appeal :)

Anne - How is it that I didn't know you had written a paranormal? I feel so left out. Looking forward to seeing what you did with your vampire!

I like most of the authors already mentioned. However, I haven't read JR Ward yet. I've got a few of hers in my stack but just haven't started them yet.

Anne Rainey said...

flchen1--tortured heroes. *sigh* I totally love those. I think my favorite tortured hero is Jacques from Dark Desire. He was so yummy!

Lisa--LOL! I need to get my butt in gear, don't I? Honestly, I hope I do the paranormal world justice. And, as expected, I'm hooked so there will certainly be much more paranormals from me in the future! :)

I think you're all right. What I love about vamp stories (and most other paranormals) is the extra kick of heat, the bad boy heroes, the slightly more aggressive alphas that get away with it because they're just so damn sexy :)

And I love Kresley Cole, JR Ward, Nalini Singh, and a number of other authors who are doing these kinds of stories so very well, not just with vamps but all kinds of sexy otherworldly heroes. Oh, Shelley Munro is one of them with her big cats, and Deborah Cooke with her dragons! Great stuff.

Regina Carlysle said...

Hi J.K.!!! I just bought Nalini Singh but haven't read it yet. I can't wait to dig in. I've been hearing good things about her.

Hi Anne! I love the new blogspot! and of course, I love the vampires too! I started with Bram Stoker and then Anne Rice before I later found Amanda Ashley and Feehan, etc. They are hot and powerful and sexy -- every woman's dream...LOL

Hi Sophia! Thanks for stopping by!

I wanted to thank everyone for commenting AND for adding to my TBB list. LOL!

Love Susan Sizemore's stuff -- partly because of the thread of dark humour in them. Enjoyed Anita Blake (Laurell Hamilton) for a while until the plot disappeared under a welter of sex scenes...
Wrote a short myself one upon a moon, but that was a far as it went.
