Love those tortured heroes
I love a good tortured hero. I don't know what it is about them but an author really hooks me if she can write a good tortured hero that tugs my heart strings but doesn't make me feel like he's whiny. I recently finished the Twilight Saga. Totally didn't think I'd like the books. I'm not big on first person AT ALL and I don't really read YA (except Harry Potter of course). A friend of mine wanted me to read the books so badly that she bought the first one from Amazon for me and had it sent to my house. I dove in and was immediately hooked. I devoured all four books in one week then crazy as it sounds, turned around and started them again. Edward is the ultimate tortured hero. He hates what he is, truly believes that because he is a vampire that he had no soul, and fights his overwhelming hunger inside him for Bella's blood. The whole book he is at war with himself for so many reasons. He knows he shouldn't stay with Bella but he loves her so much he is incapable of staying away. I fell in love with his character. It surprised me how much his character touched me. How his inner demons pulled me in even though the book isn't in his POV. He is the tortured hero to me and I can't get enough of him.
Another book with a seriously tortured hero is In Your Wildest Dreams by Toni Blake. It's one of my favorite books of hers. Jake hooks me, speaks to me and I feel the pain of his past. Is there anything like that feeling? When an author can draw you in like that? It's amazing.
Do you like tortured heroes? What is it about them that speaks to you? If not, what is it about them that pushes you away?
