Didn't your MAMA teach you better than THAT???
Over the past few days we've been given prime examples of a serious lack of MANNERS! What the hell is wrong with people? Didn't they learn the art of grace, restaint, and good sportsmanship in those formative years? It began last week when Rep. Joe Wilson of South Carolina screamed out during a Presidential address to Congress...YOU LIE. I don't care what your politics are but this is the President of the United States and he deserves respect. Wilson showed his ass and embarrassed not only himself, but members of his own party and residents of his state.
Then, a few days later, tennis champion Serena Williams went on a tear. During her semi-final match at the US Open, she got a call she didn't agree with and went on a rampage, telling the official she was going to "shove this bleeping ball, down your bleeping throat". This happened in front of a crowd of thousands and a television audience. She lost the match. It would be a shame to see her magnificent tennis career capped by this kind of horrible behavior. She's a champion, for pity's sake, and destined for the Tennis Hall of Fame and she behaves this way over a bad call?
The other night at the Video Music Awards, nineteen year old country singer, Taylor Swift, was announced as the winner in one category and Kanye West stomped on stage, took her microphone, interupted her acceptance speech and said...Beyonce should have won this award. Ms. Swift was terribly embarrassed and the crowd hissed and booed him from the stage. Later, Beyonce won an award and graciously asked Taylor to join her and FINALLY give her 'thank you' speech. Beyonce was equally horrified that Kanye had done this thing.Where have manners gone? I'm a big believer in free speech but, damn, whatever happened to common courtesy?
In other news: Tina from Two Lips Reviews gave Ringo's Ride a FIVE LIPS review a few weeks ago and I've just learned that she named it her REVIEWERS CHOICE for the month of September. Then last night I got Four and a half heart score from Maura at The Romance Studio. Reviews are beginning to trickle in and I'm very thankful for these nice reviews.

These people think too much of themselves and believe they are above good manners.
You forgot Michael Jordan's meltdown a couple nights ago where he pretty much told off anyone and everyone who had ever pissed him off.
Must be something in the water.
Dang...Michael, too??? Please say it ain't so! I'll have to check that out.
Hell, I don't know. Is it a full moon? What? I would have been in BIG TROUBLE if I'd acted that way.
Unfortunately, it's not just famous people. I've had completely strangers reaming me out.
I wrote about that in "The Knight That Arrived First," about a mother who just stood and watched her teenaged daughter scream at me. It stuns me how people can act, and how they seem to feel it's perfectly acceptable.

The sad thing is I'm betting their moms did teach them better. Somewhere along the line they decided that the rules didn't apply to them.
I don't know what it is but I"ve had enough of these public outbursts. You can't even watch the news anymore without people yelling at one another, talking over each other so they can get their point across. Whatever happened to reasonable discussions and polite behavior?
You said it, Reg! Poor Taylor Swift! I was mortified. Thank God Beyonce has such class and sort of fixed it. The look of horror on her face when he did that...and I'm talking about Beyonce. I'd be mortified. Shows what a true jack ass he is but isn't he famous for public outbursts like this? He did something similar before I believe at the Academy Awards or something. Can't remember. Yeah, my mama taught me better. I'd have to throw myself off a cliff if I did that or risk my mama telling me like it is. Unbelievable.
Face it, darlin'...famous people tyhink they can get away with just "being themselves". The rest of the world must adhere to as set of rules of courtesy. And, like Tracy said in her post, some jerk-offs among the less fortunate people also put their mouths into gear without engaging their brains.
Common courtesy is becoming very uncommon these days... *sigh*
Yeah, Michael's HoF speech was quite nasty. Famous people really do think too much of themselves. Remember Christian Bale's meltdown on the set of Terminator?
Then of course there are the everyday average rude jerks. I had the right of way to cross the street, when this guy pulled up to make a right turn. I apparently wasn't going fast enough so he honked at me and yelled "Move your fat ass, bitch!"
I hadn't heard about Serena but the others I heard and saw and they both pissed me off. I don't know what's wrong with people. Kanye is a bully. He not only took away a 19 year old girl's moment, but also Beyonce's because when she won the award she said she was most excited about, she (rightfully so) gave her moment to Taylor. He ruined both their nights and made a fool of himself.
Oh, and I've always thought Michael Jordan was an egotistical jerk. LOL.. He spent his whole speech tearing others down, building hismelf up and talking about how he spent his life basically trying to prove anyone wrong who ever got in his way, IMO.
You deserve every fantastic review! People are getting ruder, I swear, the older I get. I think a lot of people do it for the 'shock' value and I love it when it blows up in their face. It serves them right to have people finally say enough about their bad behavior. They all are in hot water and I hope it cleanses them a little of their rudeness. LOL.
This wave of RUDENESS seems to be sweeping the country. Don't people value manners anymore. We might disagree with things but public displays are never cool. They just make everyone really uncomfortable and serve no purpose other than to make the SPEWER look like an ASS.
When I was very young, I learned to say please and thank you and I suspect most of these big mouths did, too! When did they forget those lessons?
I'm so wrapped up in things lately that I didn't see any of those things. Sorta glad too.
My attitude is simple: you're an adult, act like it!
HUGE HUGE CONGRATS on the reviews!! Yay!!!
Yay, Regina! Congrats on getting Reviewers Choice!!
It's upsetting seeing all these baby fits televised. What was Kanye thinking? I like his music but he makes it really hard to like him. Same goes for Serena. Does she not know she's a role model? And Joe Wilson? How embarrassing for our country.
Great post, Regina!
These episodes are just outrageous. My mom would give me a shift kick in the ass if I acted like that! :) And I'm a grandmother -lol
I'd be embarrassed if any of them were my children.
Congrats on the well deserved Reader's Choice!
Actually, while their mammas MIGHT have taught them better, chances are...they didn't. At some point in the last few decades, a lot of people stopped teaching good manners, work ethic, and personal responsibility. They forgot what being a parent means and tried to be their kids' best friends instead. The kids run the parents, in way too many cases. I don't just mean rich folks...poor too, in many cases.
It's one of the reasons I can't work middle and high school, unless I'm working special needs. With special needs kids, behavior mods are built into the program. With the mainstream kids, the urge to do what their parents obviously never have is WAY too strong.
Brenna
my mama would of busted my a** if i acted like these people
Thank you SO MUCH for this post. I was raised in a semi-strict half Catholic/half Methodist New England family and all three kids knew we had to say please and thank-you, that we had to respect others, that we needed to at least try to control our emotions and that our parents weren't afraid to be the bad guys occasionally and make us accountable for bad behavior. Kids today are told they are wonderful and brilliant, even when they're not, they are not made to be accountable - that is - if you screw up, there are consequences - and the reality shows have elevated what used to be called the squalor of our society to a position of high ranking. Example: Why would Kate of John and Kate plus Eight need a body guard??? And why is it desirable to have litters of children, Part A and Part B, why should we care when you do? (Can you hear me Kate's separated-at-birth sister OctoMom?)
I am well educated. I worked hard to nurture whatever gifts have been given to me and I worry that we are all being TMZed into thinking celebrity-dom is the highest goal to aspire to. We need to turn away from surface and get back to service to others and to an inner self respect for ourselves.
Whew...thanks for letting me vent!...Mary Kennedy Eastham, Author, 'The Shadow of a Dog I Can't Forget' and the upcoming novel, 'Night Surfing'.
My mom would have been too busy beating some dym sense into me to say anything.
I hate to agree with this man but Justice C. Thomas said:
"Good manners will open doors that the best education cannot."
And that is true b/c unfortunately, seeing/experiencing good manners is so rare...rare in churches, rare in politics, rare at businesses...
When I heard about all three of these events I was shocked and outraged. How can people do such a thing. I mean, shouting out "You Lie" when the President of the United States is addressing the country is unforgivable. I would be ashamed to be apart of his party and state. Then Kanye goes and makes an ass of himself, ruining Taylor Swift's moment. Dear lord it seems as if the world is having an ego attack or something. If I ever acted this way, I'd have a mouthful of soap and a sore backside.
Reg,
Great post, sweets!
I watched Taylor Swift's reaction and was mortified for her. She is just such a sweetie and you could tell she was absolutely floored and didn't even know how to react.
And to tell the President of the United States, "You lie" while he is speaking...that is absolutely uncalled for and I believe unjustified!
As for respect for others, I don't see much of it in the world anymore and that is so very sad.
Congrats on all of your great reviews, Reg. You definitely deserve them.
Hugs,
TT
The bad tempers are on thing, remember John McEnroe(sp?) did the tantrum thing a lot in tennis years ago. What's a shame is kids idolize these people.
As for what happened to Taylor, that's not bad manners, it's just being a total ASS! There is no excuse for that, ever. Thank goodness there were people there who tried to help her.
He's telling everyone he wants to apologize but she said he's made no attempt to contact her at all.
The sad thing is he's getting so much attention because of it.
I am also shocked at the lack of manners shown by the folks you mentioned. Rudeness has taken over the world! I hope not. I was on a cruise recently and was totally shocked when older men came into to dinner at night with their bloody baseball caps on their heads.
Manners. A man takes his hat/cap off when he comes indoors. He stands up when he's introduced to a man or a woman. Where did these people grow up?
test
My momma and big momma DID teach me that and they would both still be waxing my hind end for such behavior. Spankings were like olympic events to them, and they always walked away with the BRONZE, GOLD, and SILVER. Kanye, bless his heart...he needs medication or something.
Congrats on your review and I totally agree about your blog topic. It seems that no one has manners or respect for others anymore. It's truly a sad state of society.
Regina, I'm just now getting caught up on the blog posts from this week.
I'm from South Carolina and I've got to tell you, it didn't surprise me in the least that the person who yelled "you lied" was from here. Our state government officials are nothing to really write home about these days.
We're just now getting past the stupid decisions of the govenor and now this.
Kanye West is just a loud mouth, obnoxious idiot.
I hadn't heard about Michael Jordan but I did see the clip of Serena Williams.
