Confessions of a recent slash addict

Guest blogging with us today we have author Adrianne Brennan!

I have a confession to make: I am one of many women who didn't understand the appeal of slash for a very, very long time. Comprehending what was hot about watching two men go at it was beyond me. Slash between two women I’ve always found hot, but never got into erotic romance novels between two men.

It actually was not until my favorite fandom pairing arose that I "got" it: it's really about two men whom you find to be hot and whose chemistry you find to be hot that makes it work. It's also about that lovely, perhaps-only-slightly-subconscious desire to be the filling in that sandwich. It is my belief that this is why m/m erotic romance sells well with women who want to appreciate men’s bodies and sexuality and find it to be a turn on.

The genre of m/m erotic romance had gone mainstream recently, and I blame it on the British sci-fi television show known as Torchwood. Its pairing of two of the main characters, Captain Jack Harkness and Ianto Jones, have sold the show for many people who may have never watched it. I personally got into the show because I am a fan of the original show it spun off from, which is Doctor Who. Torchwood broke through a lot of boundaries for the GLBT world with its loose boundaries and definitions of sexuality with its omnisexual main character, Jack.

Often times my writing is inspired by what I read and watch on television, and I write what I consider to be “gender blind” characters for the most part. So far, my books have featured m/f, f/f, f/f/f, f/f/m, m/m, and m/f/m pairings. My scifi/paranormal erotic romance book Dawn of the Seraphs is my entry into the wide, wonderful world of m/m and it definitely won’t be my last! :D
Readers and writers, feel free to sound off! Are you a fan of the m/m genre and if so, why? Do you have any preferences as to associated genres? Do you prefer m/m paranormals, historicals, contemporary?

Hey Adrienne! Great to have you with us! Actually I've only read a few m/m scenes and find it's not to my taste and I've never laid down money for a m/m book. Same with f/f. Just doesn't do a thing for me. I know these have a niche market but as a writer, this doesn't appeal. I DO like writing menage as long as there isn't m/m action going on. I want it to be about the woman's pleasure.

In the end, it's just all a matter of personal taste, I guess.

I was never a fan of M/M but... a gay friend of mine some years ago popped in a DVD while I was at his house. He wanted me to 'get' how sexy it could be between 2 guys. LOL. It was a video (you know those vids...X) of 2 muscular, hot guys. Okay... I can totally see the draw. LOL. I've read some m/m books since then and enjoyed them if they were emotionally bonded. I love a great love story. I don't read F/F books though. It does nothing for me.

I recall buying the entire Worthington Group trilogy (Violet Summers) after reading the excerpt of Daniel's Surrender...and that was definitely m/m! I think the temperature in the room rose a dozen degrees just from the excerpt alone. That was my first experience with m/m erotica. And it spins off into m/m/f, m/f/m.

My book (Open Proposal) hadn't originally been planned as a f/f, f/f/m...but that was before the character of Eve knocked on Samantha's door in the opening scene. It became obvious with their first interaction that these women were lovers. [shrug] Sometimes that's how it happens. Couldn't scrap the book just because it took a 90 degree turn.

Personally, I love books with lots of hot sex, but what I really want is HEA. If it's 2 guys, 2 women, 2/1 of either sex -- or half a dozen that make up a pack! -- it really doesn't matter to me. Give me an intelligent story with super-steamy-fog-up-the-windows sex, connections on an emotional level, and a HEA.

I'm a big fan of m/m novels. They can take place in any time and in any place! I also enjoy m/f/m and m/m/f novels.

I recently won a f/f book. Though that's not a genre I purchase, I am willing to give it a try.

Thanks,

I haven't gotten into it myself. I'm just not sure it would be my thing. A good f/f scene can be hot though!

Thanks so much for guest blogging with us
