Favorite Lines Today at the Blog!

Sometimes I think that what makes or breaks a book is the author’s ability to deliver a really great turn of phrase. You can have an amazing plot, true-to-life characterization, but it’s those lines that stand out that make it all worth the read.

Have you ever been reading and everything is status quo. You’re getting into the characters, the plot is moving along at a nice pace, and then BAM! The author writes a line that just says it all. And as an author, the little green-eyed monster usually nips at me bad!!!! LOL I hear myself saying: I soooo want to write like that. Why can’t I write like that? What school do I need to attend to do it?

Sighhhhhhhh

No school for it. I’ve written some lines that I truly love. But do readers see it that way? I started thinking last night about some of my fave lines from my books and thought I’d post a couple today. And what I’d like everyone to do—readers and authors—is to post a fave line that you’ve read. For authors, it can be a line you’ve written. Or a line from another author’s book. And you can list more than one fave line most certainly. So, authors and readers, have at it! Post your fave lines.Name the author and title of the book, too, if you can. And definitely comment to each other!

Here are my fave lines from some of my own writing:

1.    He was wet panties and get-naked-quick in one fine-looking package. Bottled sin. A walking aphrodisiac. And all that with just a “hello”. –Twelve Days of Love http://www.jasminejade.com/p-9071-twelve-days-of-love.aspx

2.    Diving from the hidden waterfall. That’s the image his mind conjured, the feeling that raced through his body. A euphoric swell of excitement so thick he couldn’t breathe, could only taste and fall further and further, deep into the pool that was her. –Black Cougar Curse http://www.jasminejade.com/p-9014-black-cougar-curse.aspx

3.    What self-respecting forty-three-year-old woman with two grown kids wears hot pink? –Latin Rhythm http://pinkpetalbooks.com/Latin-Rhythm-Tess-MacKall.html

And today I'm showcasing Regina Carlysle's book trailer for Panther Moon. It was created for her by Tina at Topaz Promotions. Panther Moon can be purchased at Ellora's Cave. http://jasminejade.com

OMG YES

I can't remember the author or title but....

Fuck n Run- was the nickname the hero gave the heroine and it was so cute that she got mad everytime he said it but it fit perfectly. I 'bout died reading it.

Nat Dae "But I couldn’t find a PleaseLoveMeForLifeWartsAndAllDotBloodyCom."

Had me rolling

My own? I'm so hard I could fuck through steel.

Oh Lord yes I love that line from Natalie's book. Dammit, which one was it? I'll have to email and ask her now. lol

And hey girl, that line of yours is just smokin'!!!!!!!!!!!!

Marie McGaha said...

I love the 40 yr old and pink line. That cracked me up. It reminds me those hefty over thirty women with shorts on that say "Juicy". Seriously, no one over 15, or with a backside that wide should be advertising on their rear end!

LOL Rie! Tell me about it. That line is the opening line for Latin Rhythm. She's in a dressing room trying on sexy clothes to wear to a club that her friends insist she go to. She is soooo not into it. Another thing in that scene is where her friend tells her she's going to need a thong. LOL OMG...my heroine is sooo not into that.

Post one of your lines, hon. Would love to see some.

Tess MacKall said...

*snicker* Let us know where that was written for sure, Hales.

Mia Watts said...

I definitely want to know where the "fuck n run" line is from. :)

My favorite (of my own) is from Claimed by Darness (Ellora's Cave):

Humans were such fragile creatures—arrogant, consumed by their own self importance when the age before and the age following would not care about the fleeting moments of one person’s life on the earth when the next generation came to take its place. And the cycle would repeat. Throbbing music, soul-binding songs,
swaying in a primal dance of barely concealed sexuality as one flitted from moment to moment, struggling to make his importance stick before that generation too was forgotten like mist under the blaze of morning sunlight.

Tess MacKall said...

Whoaaaaaa!!!! Way to paint it, Mia girlie! Double Woot!!!!

The name of Natalie Dae's book that Hales remembered for the line:

"But I couldn’t find a Please-Love-Me-For-Life-Warts-And-All-Dot-Bloody-Com."

Is from her new release at Decadent Publishing. Title: Just For Tonight
It's from the 1NS--One Night Stand line at Decadent.

Tess, I like your #1 and #3.

Favorite lines from my novel The Arrangement:

“I’m not hungry.” The knowing smile widened. “You should eat something,” he said. His dark gaze lingered in appreciation on the split in her dress. “You’re going to need your energy.”

And this one:

In their feverish craze, they hadn’t even bothered to remove their clothes. Her elegant green gown was crumpled around her waist, while his boxers and tuxedo pants were pushed just low enough to allow him the ease with which to penetrate her. It was uncivilized, primal.

My quuote comes from my all time favorite book, Wuthering Heights where Catherine explains her feelings about Heathcliff even though she is marrying Linton:

My love for Heathcliff resembles the eternal rocks beneath: a source of little visable delight but necessary.

Mia Watts said...

Thanks, Tess. I'm partial to your line three. :) Got any more to drop on us??

Here's another one. She's Got Balls, Resplendence Publishing dot com, Mia Watts.

Vin sprawled on his belly across one of the twin beds, naked. A streetlight glowed through the blinds to touch his body with a lover’s admiration, skimming the dips and silvering the rises. He slept with his face propped on folded arms allowing his black hair to spill like ink over his cheek, jaw and shoulders, reaching only the top of his back where the ends snaked in a twisted pattern on glowing skin.

From one of my Woodmont Series

"It took seconds for her to die and a year for her to fall."

Mia Watts said...

I suppose I should put a Katie Blu one in here too. Gonna take me a second to search it out.

Okay,
Beloved Brother, Elloras Cave dot com, Katie Blu

"You watched me take Mrs. Gilfoy. Watched her come. Watched me come. Why?”
Only his hands touched her in this position and only on her shoulders, but his body was a muscled barrier she would not be able to free herself from if she tried. “You were on the porch. What did you want me to do? Offer you tea?”"

Toni V.S. said...

I've got two:

“If I were the last man in the universe, my dear,” Sinbad answered. “You’d have to stand in line.”
(SInbad's Last Voyage)

and

Once Tucker McKenzie was so shy around girls, he was given the nickname Friar Tuck. That had been resolved quite easily his freshman year when he’d lost his virginity during a riotous drinking bout at a pledge party. Nevertheless, that embarrassing epithet still stuck, though sometimes his Brothers spoonerized it into Try a Fuck.
(Blood Bay)

Oooooo la la! Very very sexy Delaney!

Tess MacKall said...

Awwwww Sarah. That's a good one. Lot of hidden meaning in there too.

Tess MacKall said...

Beautiful, Mia! I'm a sucker for descriptions for sure.

Tess MacKall said...

Wow! Cassie. That's cool as hell. And now you've got me wanting to know JUST what that means!

Tess MacKall said...

LOL Mia---errrr Katie Blu!Maybe she should have tossed the damn tea in his face. LOL I love books with a touch of humor.

Tony-Paul said...

The last line is the best:

The brake lever would keep any action below his waist from happening, anyway, which, considering the way he was feeling about the girl, might be a good thing. In the midst of the lustful feelings trying to erupt, he had to stifle a desire to laugh. Hell of a condom…all iron and steel and hydraulic tubing.

Tess MacKall said...

LMAO @ Try a Fuck! Outrageous, Toni. Love it.

And the Sinbad line--oooooooooh me likey!

You have all been posting fun and sexy quotes. My favorite quote is a little long and little heavy but here it is:
“I want you to always hold your head up and follow your dreams wherever they take you. Don’t you ever listen to the people out to hurt you or make you cry. Listen to your heart and be better than them. No one gets ahead by hurting others. The only real peace anyone will ever have is the one that comes from within. Live you life on your own terms and make it a happy life. Always. That’s what’s important.”
Quote from Acheron by Sherrilyn Kenyon
I love this quote and I share it with lots of people. Okay, now I will go hunt down some fun quotes.

Tess MacKall said...

Excellent quote. Excellent advice from the character too, Jen.

AM I the only old fashioned, no, Sarah is here, but the best one for me is from Gone With the WInd.

"Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn."

I meand does that say it all?

Here's another quote from my book Twelve Days of Love at Ellora's Cave.

She was like cotton candy, old-fashioned melt-in-your-mouth peppermints and homemade peach ice cream, and he was tired of waiting for a taste.

Tess MacKall said...

Whooo hoooo Someone finally gave us one of my fave all time quotes!

That line does indeed just say it all, Rita. And you just knew he meant every single word.

I noticed they now have Gone With the Wind on Netflix a couple of days ago. I think I'm going to watch it this weekend for the fiftieth time. lol

Molly Daniels said...

My fave from Kenzie's Wild At Heart:

“The only one with the sense to return to his own bed before getting caught,” he retorted. “And I don’t sing ‘Rock Star’ in the showe.!”
“You heard that, huh? Brad likes to listen to the radio, and we both like Nickleback,” she defended their impromptu duet.
“The sheep heard you and decided to stay up in the mountains."

Harlie Williams said...

Mine is a line that I actually wrote and some of yall have already read:

"It had been too long since anything flesh and non-battery operated had been down there."

Yes, I wrote that.

Harlie Williams said...

I also like:

"Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn."

Great book

Tess MacKall said...

OMG @ sheep, Molly...errr Kenzie! lol

Very cool. Love banter like that for sure.

Tess MacKall said...

LOL Harlie...Yep I read that and thought it was great. Nothing like a woman's imagination for sure.

Alexis Reed said...

My favorite, from KMM's Shadowfever:

"I didn’t ask. Some things are better left unsaid.
He looked at me and I shivered. I never get enough of him.
Never will.
He lives.
I breathe.
I want. Him. Always.
Fire to my ice. Ice to my fever.
Later we would go to bed, and when he rose over me, dark and vast and eternal, I’d know joy."

From my own? Hmmm...have to think about that one for a bit.

Tess MacKall said...

Ohhhh I like that Alexis. Dark and erotic. Incredibly sexy. Definitely stop back by and post something of your own, hon!

This one's from the first book in my fantasy series.

“This is way too hard to decode——!” Lorian scowled and held her head in pain. “We’d better start from the beginning, with one question I need an answer to. And don’t feed me a pile of unicorn crap, mister 'Dances with Death'.”

Renee Vincent said...

I know I'm late, Tess, but I wanted to stop by and tell how much I LOVED your favorite lines. And I so enjoyed everyone else's on the comments section. Too cool!

Here's one from my first historical romance, RÆLIKSEN:

"You are correct in saying that desires often come from things we cannot easily gain--mine, being that of your love. By all accounts, I do wish I could steal it. But I am not that sort of man. I will wait. Forever and a day...I will wait."

Tess MacKall said...

Thank you, Renee. And oooooo very romantic line you have m'dear. Love it.

Tess MacKall said...

Nicki! I so love that line. I'm guessing this is a fantasy because of "unicorn crap" and "dances with death". Very cool line. Feisty heroine too! Love that!
