She Swallowed WHAT????

Was yesterday MONDAY? Nope, Wednesday. Woke up to ice and snow everywhere. It was the perfect day to hang out in jammies with plenty of hot coffee but instead I was scheduled for a ROOT CANAL at my dentist.

Now I've already told ya'll how much I hate going to the dentist. Maybe it's the idea of someone messing with my mouth or the fact I don't deaden worth a flip but this is something I put off as a rule.So I got up and slipped and slided across town to make my dental appointment figuring I'd be out of commission most of the day because of what my dentist had planned for me. When I got there, he said there wouldn't be a root canal, they were just going to discuss things and schedule the work on Monday. I'm actually thinking a phone call to discuss things might've been a good idea.

Anyway, since I was there they sent me to the hygenist for teeth cleaning. Didn't want to waste the trip across town in the ice and snow so okay.Everything went fine. The hygenist with fun to talk with and had a great personality. She said...do you floss these back teeth? I said...no, they are too tight and the floss tears to pieces. To this she said...I can do it. She started on the back teeth with the floss then goes...uh oh, oh nooooo. Don't SWALLOW! So what do I do? I SWALLOW. A crown on a far back tooth popped off and went right down my throat. OMG! I struggled up from the chair as the hygenist tried the hymlich maneuver. Did I misspell that? HYMLICH? I don't know. Anyway, there was that and back slapping but the damn thing was GONE. My dentist rushed in to check things out. He said this has only happened to him a couple of times. Lucky me. LOL.

I HAD to laugh. The whole morning had been one mishap after another.I finally pointed at him and said...This is why I don't like to come to see you! Of course, he knows my fear of all things dental and had to laugh too.

Going to the dentis is SO scary. I hate to go. I had a really mean dentist as a child how put his hand over my mouth when I was crying and held my face telling me there would be none of that in his office. It was so tramatic for me.

I worked in dental offices for over thirty years and I still hate sitting in that chair. They are people just like you and me, there are good ones and bad ones. The hard part is finding a good and gentle one.
So you are going to have to do the search thing. Get some gloves and go for it. It happens all the time. One lady swallowed a four unit bridge, (four caps connected together). Now that coulda hurt comin' out.
With the cost of a crown today, you have to find it. Happy hunting!

Dentist visits are nerve wracking. I hate the resonating sound of the drill or even the little rotating toothbrush.

Two days after my husband got his crown, he was eating cereal...bran flakes to be precise, and crunch. Not the sound one should hear eating bran flakes. It was a holiday weekend and living in a small town in the middle of nowhere (otherwise known as Roswell, NM), we had to wait four days for the dentist to return and fix it.

Oh me TOO, Kell!!! We had one who slapped our little hands and was soooo scary. I've disliked going to the dentist ever since!

I had to laugh too, Debbie. It was just a comedy of damn errors...the entire morning. Finally I just laughed. His staff of course was upset but then they finally started to laugh too.

Oh HELL NO, Mary. I am NOT doing that. snicker. My dentist is replacing the crown for me and yes, they are verrrrry expensive. Think I'm going to encourage my kids to become dentists. My mouth dropped open when I saw what the root canal was going to cost. Oh MY.

You're from Roswell, Emma??? OMG. Small world. I'm in Abilene, Texas and we often vacation in Ruidoso. So we've driven through there many many times.

We tried to explain about the alien stuff to our daughter and she just REFUSED to believe it until we finally found a tv show about it. Now she's dying to go back to Ruidoso so we can drive through Roswell. :-)

Dental disasters always happen at the most inconvenient times. Once I had an emergency while we were vacationing in South Padre Island. I was freaking OUT.

Oooh, I feel for you, Regina! I hate going to the dentist too, but I have an appointment next Tuesday to get my front tooth rebonded. I was eating popcorn about a month ago and my bond broke off. But when I went to the dentist, he found three cavities that had to be fixed first, so the bonding was put off. The only plus is, my dentist is so very entertaining. Conversely, he always seems to be running late and I so hate waiting.

I love your story. I too hate the dentist - with a grand passion. I needed a root canal a number of years ago - back in 'the day' dentists removed too much tooth when they put in fillings so one of my teeth cracked and that was the worst pain. My dentist, who did not do root canals sent me to - I kid you not - Dr. Cassanova. Oh my Gawd! Not only was he totally cute, he gave great root canal. So to summarize - I feel your pain and I'm glad the Heimlich maneuver worked!

I literally leapt from the dentist chair and ran down the hall once when a dentist came at me with a needle. He looked like he was enjoying it too much.

When he and the nurse caught me in the waiting room they begged me to sit down. I stood awhile longer and they made me another appointment while the dentist talked to me and got me to calm down.

Same dentist that three visits later made some very unprofessional suggestions to me with his wife--the office manager--sitting only 30 or 40 ft away. They had just adopted a baby.

I don't like dentists. Don't trust them. Period.

R,

I too have a dental fear. When I was about twelve I had our dentist's son, who had just graduated from dental school, dig out my wisdom teeth. About half-way through, the numbing effect wore off and I started to cry and beg him to stop, but he just said, "Almost there," and kept digging.
Needless to say, I didn't even return to have the stitches removed. I've had a fear of dentists for the rest of my life!
But I had to admit, I was laughing with you!

I might be the only person here who likes her dentist. I've been going to him since I can remember and even after he gave me a big puffy cheek in high school (hematoma) I still go back to him. He's a super guy. But I learned my lesson. Floss, brush, rise compulsively! I haven't had a cavity since.

I do feel for you, though, even if I did snicker a wee bit. *G*

Heimlich!!! Thanks Julia! snicker. I could NOT figure out how to spell that one. HA.

Funny, when I told my story last night as good writer friend says she calls hers DR. HOTTIE!!! I kid you NOT. LOL.

Oh Tess honey! We've talked about this stuff before. My dentist is very nice and professional and the family has used him for YEARS but it makes no different. The staff knows to remind me to BREATHE. I clench my fists around the chair arms until my knuckles are white. It's just awful. And NEEDLES...sheesh!

Regina Carlysle said...

Lordy, Taylor!!! You mean he kept AT IT???? OMG. I went through the whole thing with the deadening stuff wearing off and I thought I was gonna FLY outta that chair. Now it's gas for me.

Regina Carlysle said...

BAAAAAD GIRL, Isabelle for laughing as me. SNICKER. Just kidding. I brush, rinse...do the whole thing. I never get cavities. Unfortunately, as we get older our teeth change, wear down, etc. What can I say??? Falling apart here. lol

OMG poor you. Regina I don't envy a root canal.

I have sensitive gums. They bleed, especially a lot. My dentist said, "Must be Gingivitis." Until they tested and found out it wasn't. Well, duh. They don't hurt they just bleed a lot.

Still every time I get a new Hygenist I get the same old "YOu must have gingivitis" schtick, until they read my file.

I floss and brush a lot because I don't want that problem.

Kelley I know a friend that was slapped by a dentist as a child. He was charged and fired after several more abuse complaints came out.

Regina Carlysle said...

Ah, same thing with me Amy, except they always, always ask if I ate lemons when i was a little kid. Ummm NO. lol

I'm not sure if a HAWT dentist would be better or worse . . .

Open wide . . . ?

I'd probably giggle like a horde of teenage girls.

I'm not from Roswell. I just happened to stop there for TWO years. I'm back in the home town of my heart, Houston. BUT, did I hear you say Abilene? Lytle's Steakhouse is the BEST steakhouse in TEXAS! I haven't had anything so good, well except for my husband's cooking, since we moved back two years ago.

I hate the dentist, too. Every time I go, they find several issues. I need a root canal REDONE (yeah, fun), 2 more crowns, and some cavities filled. You'd think I never brush and floss, wouldn't you? But I do both every single friggin' day.

Hate my dentist. Tell her that every time I see her, even though she's a lovely woman and very gentle. I tell her, "It's nothing personal, but I'd like nothing better than to never see you again." Sigh. If only that could come true... I'm certain Heaven has no dentists.

:)Becky

I KNOW exactly what you mean, Genella? Do you really want a guy like that looking at your dang tonsils???? LOL

Regina Carlysle said...

OMG EMMA!!!! You could have stood in the parking lot of Lytle Land and Cattle Company and yelled and I would've heard you. I live in the neighborhood right across the highway from it. WOW. We lived in Houston years ago when we were first married and my husband was in law school. I loved Houston but we were sooooo damn poor then. I worked for the now defunct Houston Post.He clerked during law school for a downtown law firm. We were there during Hurricane Alicia.

I still say it's an incredibly small world. HA

Regina Carlysle said...

I know exactly what you mean, Becky. I told my dentist I really really like him! I'm not sure he believes me...lol.

We have the best dentist. She's SOOOO gentle. I've been taking the girls there since they were really little and I once told her if she ever moved, I'd be moving too! LOL
