Restraining the Receptionist by Juniper Bell

NOTE:  Juniper's post was scheduled for yesterday, Saturday, June 11. However, through a blogger glitch--don't we just love those? LOL--it did not post, and therefore has been posted today. And oddly enough is showing the date as yesterday. Beats me! I'm just glad she's here and her new book looks smokin' hawt!!!!

I’m going through first-time jitters all over again. Trembling with nerves, torn between desire and shyness. Wondering if I’ll measure up…if it will hurt…if this will be my first and my last time…

See, while I’m no longer a virgin in most respects, I am when it comes to sequels. Restraining the Receptionist, out June 14, is my first. It’s a follow-up to my book, Training the Receptionist. I never particularly intended to write a sequel. But I actually got requests for one, which blew my mind to the point that I couldn’t … well, restrain myself.

I quickly discovered that writing a sequel is really weird. It’s like picking up dolls you abandoned in the toy box. Your characters are still piled there in the same position you left them, waiting for you to decide what to do with them. Last time I saw Dana, Ethan and Simon, a receptionist and her two sexy bosses, they’d finished a hot three-way and had made a deal to continue working/playing together.

Did they have any more stories left in them? Would their voices come back to me, particularly Dana’s, my first person narrator? Would the new story please the readers who had enjoyed the first one? Or (nooooo!!) would it disappoint them? These are questions I never worried about before. But with a sequel, they seem to go with the territory.

The good news is, Dana reappeared without missing a beat. And another character immediately grabbed my attention. Most of Training the Receptionist involved Simon’s relationship with Dana. Ethan was a shadowy figure who only appeared at the end. This time, he took center stage right away. He’s a very strong, very dominant character with some demons in his past. Dana has her hands full with him.

The story that unfurled surprised me, as they always do. The surprise here was how Ethan challenged Dana to discover even more about herself—about her spirit of adventure, and her capacity for trust and surrender. As I wrote, the enigmatic Ethan emerged from the shadows and revealed some of his complexities.

And that turned out to be the most fun part of writing a sequel—the chance to go deeper with characters I already knew and loved.

In a few days, Restraining the Receptionist will be out of my hands and into those of whoever wants to read it. And then I’ll find out how my first time went. Whether it was painful or orgasmically awesome. I already know it was good for me. My first time was way too much fun. I’m hooked.

If I smoked, I’d need a cigarette right now.

How are sequels for you? Do you like reading them? Writing them? What’s the best part and the worst part of a sequel? I’ll choose one commenter to receive a download of the first book, Training the Receptionist.

BLURB:
Every deal has a loophole.

…the Receptionist, Book 2

Dana Arthur’s new job with the firm of Cowell & Dirk is going well. Translation: the occasionally kinky ménage with her two bosses, Ethan and Simon, has been several months of politically incorrect bliss.

Except the relationship feels unbalanced. While Ethan is the undisputed master, the partners’ iron-clad agreement stipulates that Simon must be present as she performs her “duties”. And she senses there’s a subtle, powerful tug-of-war developing for more than just her body.

Simon had agreed to share the firm’s fiery, sensually daring receptionist…to a point. With Simon out of town, Ethan plans a feast of erotic temptations designed to have Dana begging him to break the deal. He didn’t realize his heart would be a casualty.

Once she surrenders to his wicked demands, Dana realizes there’s no going back. It’s time for a three-way renegotiation…this time, all or nothing.

A Peek At "What She Needs"

Today I figured I'd give you a taste of my upcoming Samhain release!

Samhain Publishing

What She Needs

Cape May--book 3

contemporary erotic romance

Part 2 of Tory, Devon and Con's love triangle

Blurb:

Taking turns was never their strong suit…

Devon Mason and Con Walker are sexy, honorable, loving, and completely devoted. In other words, everything Tory looks for in a relationship. But what’s she supposed to buy her two lovers on V Day? Chocolate? How average is that? Their little love triangle is anything but average!

When Con surprises her with a weekend in Cancun, just the three of them, Tory is all over it—until she realizes Con forgot to include Devon in the package. Now their little love triangle is suffering, thanks to a couple of hard-headed men who both want to be numero uno.

Con was content to let Devon take control at Christmas, but now it’s his turn. A weekend in Cancun seems the perfect place for a romantic getaway—then Devon says he’s planning to surprise Tory with a trip to Aruba, and Con’s possessive instincts kick in. He’d always been happy to share Tory with the guy he cares for like a brother. But the deeper Con falls in love, the harder it is to keep from ripping Tory away from Devon.

Sooner or later something—or someone—is going to give.

Warning: This title contains lots of steamy, explicit sex. Hot, jealous men in need of a strong, intelligent woman. And a warm, loving ménage a trois relationship.

Coming February 22nd!

Chapter One

As Con pried his eyes open, the first thing that captured his attention was Tory’s face nestled against his chest. The early morning light coming from the large windows across the room allowed him to see her small, curvy body tucked in close. His eager dick flexed its approval. Damn, he loved sleeping with her. Even though Tory was still in possession of her grandmother’s house, she went over there only a few days a week. Con had tried to persuade her to sell the old place, but she’d flat refused. It hadn’t taken him long to realize she kept it for sentimental reasons. It bothered him that she was paying taxes on the place, though. Thankfully, Devon, his best friend and partner in their little love triangle, didn’t have the same attachment to his condo. Clearly seeing the benefits of sharing expenses, he’d sold it and moved right in.

Careful not to wake Tory, Con gently pushed the sheet down their bodies, baring her one pretty inch at a time. It’d taken him and Devon a few weeks of coaxing, but they’d finally managed to talk Tory into sleeping naked. It’d been well worth the effort too. As he smoothed his palm down her side to her hip, all he felt was firm, warm, feminine skin. She mumbled and slung one smooth-as-satin leg over his calves. Christ, she was cute. Watching her sleep had become an obsession for him. There was just something about seeing Tory Jeffries with her guard down, looking so sweet and vulnerable. It pulled every single one of Con’s protective instincts front and center.

He looked across the room and spotted a bare-chested Devon sitting in the recliner. He’d pulled on his navy blue pajama bottoms and his laptop was open. Whatever was on the screen no longer held his attention, though. Devon sent him a grin, telling Con without words exactly what he intended to do—watch. He’d known for years that his friend was a voyeur and Con had been content to play the exhibitionist on several occasions. He didn’t quite understand it, but neither did he mind.

Turning his attention back to Tory, Con let his hand travel a leisurely path over Tory’s shoulder and lower back before reaching the plush cushion of her ass. Her bottom was a thing of beauty. He could spend hours kissing and fondling her there. He cupped it, filling his palm with her sexy flesh. She moaned and pressed closer, her damp pussy sliding along his thigh. The slight provocation spurred him into action. Grasping her around the waist, Con pulled her on top of him, blanketing himself with her warm, supple body.

"Good Morning, Con.”

He nudged his cock between her thighs and damn near drowned in bliss at the feel of her soft little pussy. “How’d you know it was me?”

“Because Devon is most likely up and working already.” She turned her head and glanced across the room. “Morning, Devon,” she mumbled.

Devon sat up and closed the laptop before placing it on the end table next to the chair. “Morning, sugar.”

Letting out a yawn, Tory snuggled against him again. “It Saturday, Devon. Why are you up?”

“I had too damn many meetings this week and got behind on a few things.”

“This is all real fascinating, but I’d rather play.” Con rubbed his cock against Tory’s pussy, teasing and evoking a throaty little moan from her. “Does our little baby want to play?”

Without answering, Tory started to move her hips, beginning a rhythmic rotating motion that had his cock hardening farther. Her cheek was pressed against his chest and one hand splayed wide, directly over his heart. “Mmm, our sweet Tory does want to play, Dev.”

"I can see that,” Devon said, his voice low.

Con looked over in time to see Devon get to his feet. Their gazes clashed. Devon pulled his pajama pants down and his cock sprang free. It was hard and already dripping with precome. Con continued to stare as Devon kicked his pants free and sat back down, one hand wrapped tight around his cock. When Devon’s smile came, something deep inside Con stirred the way it always did when they played this particular game.

Tearing his gaze away from Devon, Con turned his attention back to the woman draped over him like a warm, silky blanket. He pushed the wild mane of Tory’s hair to one side and kissed her exposed cheek, savoring the flavor of her creamy skin. Her eyes fluttered open and her tongue darted out, licking at her dry, swollen lips. He watched the emotions skitter across her face as she went from drowsy to totally alert. Her gaze heated and Con’s chest tightened. Damn, the woman could make a monk shake with need. Some part of him half-expected Tory to reject him. Even after so many nights spent together, he still couldn’t help but wonder why she hadn’t kicked him to the curb. Okay, so he was a successful businessman now. He no longer had to fight just to survive. But while he might’ve moved up in the world, financially and socially, deep down Con still felt like the punk kid nobody wanted around. He was just too fucking glad Tory had never known him back then. Too fucking glad she saw something in him worth keeping around.

For a moment, Con let his mind replay the previous night. Tory had been exhausted from helping Summer with her bed-and-breakfast. He admired the fact she never thought twice about lending a hand whenever a friend was in need, but he hated that she worked so damn hard all the time. Devon had drawn her a bath. They’d both instructed her to relax and unwind. Afterward, Con had a dinner of grilled salmon and steamed vegetables ready and waiting. The full-body massage after had been pure impulse. Of course, having their hands on the woman they loved was no hardship. And seeing her all fresh and pink from her bath had been a little too much provocation. On the other hand, her begging them to take her hadn’t hurt either. His fair little princess had been an eager and wild participant in the sex games that followed. And judging by the dampness pressing against his cock now, she was wide awake and ready for round two.

Con was only too happy to comply.

Steamy Christmas Stories?

Have you read a steamy Christmas story? Personally I love them and now that I have this new Nook Color I've been hunting them out left and right. Of course since that theme is a fave, I had to write my own, lol.

If you read "What She Wants" then you'll remember Summer's blonde friend, Tory. The truth is, when I thought up Summer's story I had no intention of making it the start of a series. Then Tory popped onto the page. She kept nudging me and nudging me. Now, Tory doesn't just have one story, but two. "What She Needs", which comes out Feb. 2011, is more of Tory, Con and Devon. These three just wiggled their way into my heart and I couldn't stop thinking about them.:)

Except there’s never one around when she needs one—and she needs a date for the event of the year, her friend Con Walker’s annual Christmas party. Not that she couldn’t go alone, but spending the evening as a third wheel doesn’t appeal.

After growing up together with an up-close-and-personal view of life’s ugly side, it doesn’t surprise Devon and Con that they’ve fallen for the same woman. Devon stood on her front step, one broad shoulder braced against the doorframe, wearing a crisp white cotton shirt with the sleeves rolled up, and a pair of black slacks that showed off his long, powerful legs. She’d never seen him looking quite so magnificent. He’d even tried to comb the wild mane of his hair into some semblance of style. She could have told him he shouldn’t have bothered. Tory had always liked Devon’s messy brown hair.

“You look great,” Tory complimented, hoping her voice didn’t sound quite as throaty as she suspected.

His grin, laced with just a shade of masculine need, melted her insides as he stared down at her. “And you look sexy as hell, sugar.”

Tory’s hands shook with nerves. Another first. Devon never made her nervous. They’d been friends too long for that. Three years of knowing a person, seeing them at their best as well as their worst, tended to bridge the gap. Admittedly, Devon wasn’t acting himself of late. For instance, the way he looked at her now, as if he wanted to run his tongue over her, slowly, for hours. Yeah, that was a new one.

“Thanks. I spent a bloody fortune, so it better look fabulous.”

“You’re a total babe. I’m going to have to fend the guys off.”

Tory narrowed her eyes. “Why would you even bother?”

Devon stepped through the front door. His hand lifted to her cheek, and the warm strength of him obliterated her nerves in an instant. “Because you’re with me,” he growled.

“This isn’t a date,” Tory reminded him—and herself. If only she could stop thinking of it in that light, it’d give her words more credibility.

“I’m a man. You’re a woman. We’re going to a party together. How is that not a date?”

“We’re friends. This is no different than if I were going on a bike ride with Summer.”

“So, Summer thinks you look sexy, then? Summer can’t take her gaze off the way that satin hugs your curves?”

“Devon.” His name and nothing more. It was all Tory could manage in that moment.

He stroked a finger down her chin, then removed his hand altogether. She shivered clear to her toes. “Come on, sugar. Let’s party.”

She smiled, feeling her confidence level rise a notch. She was going out with one of her best friends and she was going to have a good time. Simple as that.

Fifteen minutes later, when Tory entered Con’s mansion—and that was the only way to describe a house the size of Con’s—she took in the beautiful decorations. One of the tallest trees she’d ever seen filled one corner of the great room. Mistletoe hung in various spots around the spacious room. The winding staircase leading to the second floor was decorated with large red bows and evergreen wreaths. The festive atmosphere warmed her heart. Con had grown up being bounced from one foster home to another. Poor and alone, with the exception of Devon, Con had built quite a life for himself with a lot of hard work and a good sense of business. Christmas music and more than a hundred guests filled the place to bursting and made her feel less skittish. Big crowds of strangers she could handle. It was the man at her side who had her wondering.

Tory quickly scanned the crowd, but didn’t see Con anywhere. “Where’s the man of the hour?”

Devon placed his hand at the small of her back and led her across the room. “Probably in the kitchen. You know how he is about the food. Everything has to be perfect or he has a conniption.”

She envisioned Con hovering over some poor unsuspecting chef and groaned. “We’d better find him before we have a repeat of last year’s Christmas party.”

Devon snorted. “Con deserved to have cheesecake dumped over his head. He was being an ass.”

She clutched her purse tighter as they neared the double doors leading into the kitchen. “But it was a waste of a perfectly good cheesecake, and that’s just wrong no matter how you look at it.”

“I’d forgotten how much you loved that stuff.” He chuckled. “Con felt terrible because you looked so sad over the loss.”

Pushing the door inward, she groused, “I wasn’t sad. No one gets sad over cheesecake.”

Devon snorted. “You looked like a little lost puppy.”

She started to protest that ridiculous statement, but the sight that greeted her inside the huge room with its stainless steel counters and cabinets took her breath. Not one, but three cheesecakes sat on the counter mere feet away. One was topped with strawberries, another with cherries, and the third was drizzled with chocolate sauce. Drooling would be extremely unladylike, Tory remaindered herself. She spied Con next to the stove, hovering near a steaming pot of…something. He turned, and their gazes clashed. The slow grin that spread across his face had her heart beating faster. Con should never be allowed to smile. It was like watching the sun rise over Cadillac Mountain in Maine. It made you want to stop and stare for a good ten minutes.

Unable to budge even an inch, Tory watched as Con crossed the room then gently pulled her into his arms. He kissed her lightly on the forehead. Inching backward, he looked her over. “You look gorgeous, baby.”

Taking advantage, Tory let her gaze wander. Con’s close-cropped midnight black hair, navy blue slacks and the white dress shirt straining to contain his thickly muscled torso sent a little shiver down her body. Con was a big man. Powerful. A little intimidating until you got to know him. His silver eyes and the hard planes of his face told of a rough life. Oh, Con might be rolling in money now, but Tory knew it hadn’t always been that way. In fact, growing up, he and Devon both had been forced to fight just to survive. She didn’t know all of it, but the little she did know always made her heart ache for the pair.

“Thanks,” she said. “You, uh, clean up pretty well yourself.”

“Gee, thanks.” He tweaked her nose. “If you’re going to be ornery, then you won’t get any of my cheesecake.”

She peeked around his shoulder and sighed. “There are three of them.”

Con stepped back and folded his arms over his chest. “And I made each one myself. So, be a good girl tonight.”

Devon stepped forward, a frown marring his handsome face. “Why three?”

“To make up for last year’s fiasco,” Con muttered. “Hell, Tory, you looked so sad when you saw that ruined dessert, I figured I owed you.”

Tory planted her hands on her hips and glared at the two men. “For the last time, I wasn’t sad. Upset, yes. That cheesecake looked delicious. But I was not sad, for crying out loud.”

“Were too,” Con and Devon both said at the same time.

It was futile to argue with the two of them. Especially when they chose to gang up on her. “Whatever,” she said, waving a hand in the air. “I need a drink.”

“Champagne?” Con ventured.

“White wine, Con,” Devon said. “Tory hates champagne.”

“Oh, right.” Con headed toward the long steel countertop where several crystal glasses sat. He picked up a bottle of white wine and held it up for her to inspect. “This just arrived, actually. I’ve been letting it breathe. It’s a new winery I’m thinking of investing in. You’ll be my taste-tester.”

“As long as I get to be your cheesecake taste-tester as well, I’ll be whatever you want.”

Con glanced over at Devon, and the pair exchanged a mysterious look. Neither spoke as Con poured the wine. He brought it to her. Tory sniffed the fragrant liquid. Spicy and sweet. Interesting. She took a sip. “Smooth, sweet, but not too sweet. Nice.”

“Good.”

The music changed, and suddenly Tory wanted to dance. “Which of you is going to dance with me? Don’t make me look for someone else, I don’t feel like doing the flirting thing tonight.”

“I thought I made it clear you’re my date,” Devon chastised. “No flirting unless it’s with me.”

“Or me,” Con said, his voice low, a little rough.

Tory looked at Devon, then Con. She couldn’t tell if they were teasing or not. She didn’t want to know, either. Instead she took another sip of her wine. Devon plucked the glass out of her hand and handed it to Con. “Come on, sugar. You can move those sexy hips all you want.”

As they went back out to the main room, Con following close behind, Tory’s mind whirled with the possibility that the two men were making a move on her. Could it be? Devon tended to flirt. It was just his way. Con, not so much. So, what was up with them tonight? Read Chapter One

Looking Back

For my second Christmas giveaway, I'll randomly draw one name from the comments to win a copy of What She Craves, which doesn't actually release until next Tuesday.

When I was growing up things were tough for my parents. They both worked a lot of hard hours, but there wasn't a lot of money. Actually, there was barely any. Now that I'm older I can see that they had to be pretty creative with the budget just to make ends meet. With 4 kids, three of them big, hungry boys, I can imagine that Christmas was a stressful time for them. Keeping a roof over our heads and food on the table kept them on their toes, so the holidays must have been esp. rough.

Still, I never knew that then. To me, Christmas was magic. Seeing the tree filled with all our homemade ornements, smelling my grandma's wonderful cookies in the air, counting down the days until the big day, that's what Christmas was for me. Big smiles and lots of fun.

We had our little traditions in my family too. We always watched the Charlie Brown Christmas, mom and dad always waited until after we were asleep the night before to wrap all the presents and put them under the tree. I think it was their way of keeping our child's heart alive. When morning came, my brother Bobby would come into my room and nudge me awake, then whisper, "Sissy, wake up, Santa came!" The four of us would head out to the family room and just stare at all the presents that had magically appeared overnight. After mom and dad woke up and had their coffee, we'd get the go ahead to dig in.

The truth is there weren't tons of spectacular gifts in those days. We didn't get the latest and greatest toys. I remember teddy bears and dolls with pull strings. Sometimes new mittens or a new coat. Still, each present with it's colorful paper wrapped wih a parent's love sent a flutter of excitement through me.

Now that I'm a mother, I can look back on those days and realize just how hard my parents worked to give us kids as many happy memories as possible. To maybe give us what they never had. Even when I was older and in high school, my brother would wake me on Christmas morning and whisper those wonderful words, "Sissy, wake up, Santa was here!".

Today, I still get excited on Christmas morning. My heart still flutters when I see the presents under the tree. The only difference is that now my husband and I are the ones staying up late and wrapping the night before. We're the ones keeping the magic alive for our girls. And I have my mom and dad to thank for that.

Mom, if you're reading this, and I know you are because no matter what I do you're always there to support me, I want you to know that I appreciate how hard you both worked. You kept the magic burning bright for all of us. Thank you for always making it special, even when things looked pretty bleak. I love you both!

Writing Advice From A Publisher, An Agent, Two Editors & Several Terrifc Authors

Today, I'd like to share a little bit about my publishing journey. I first started writing in 2003. I didn't take it seriously until a year or so later. Oh, sure, I wrote a few novels and submitted to big NY houses, then proceeded to get shot down. That's when I realized I didn't know what I was doing. Like many new writers, I just sort of assumed I could write and get published, easy as pie. Once I woke up from that little dream, I began the intense process of researching.

I bought books on publishing. I read tons of articles on various topics like sagging middles and passive vs active (and tons more). I went to conferences. I emailed published authors asking for advice. I didn't know the first thing about a query letter or a synosis, much less writing a bestselling romance book. I gathered samples of everything and started experimenting. I'd write scenes. Not whole stories, just snippets. I taught myself how to write various forms of poetry to help me develop a more descriptive voice. I read classics like Poe and Dickens, as well as just about every current romance book I could get my hands on. The Half Priced Bookstore was my best bud!

Finally, I felt like I was ready to try again. To make a long story short, I met Christina Brashear at the Lori Foster Event and pitched my erotic romance story Haley's Cabin. She listened as I tried not to look nervous. In truth, I was about ready to throw up. Thankfully, she let me know I could send her the full. Yes, step one was complete, but I still had to get to step two--the offer of a contract. That came on a Saturday morning. My husband was cooking breakfast and I was checking my email. And there it was, the email from Linda at Samhain Publishing offering to publish my story. That day is still one of my favorite memories. It's right up there with giving birth to my kids. Why? Because I'd finally made it. My dream was coming true.

That was in 2006. Since that day I've sold several other stories to Samhain. Three stories to Red Sage Publishing and two books and a novella to Kensington. It was then that I received a call from agent Jennifer Schober at Spencerhill Associates, who recently sold two more of my books to Kensington (she rocks!).

The other day, when I was wondering what sort of advice or tips I could provide to new authors, I realized something. My journey is not for everyone! There is more than one path to publishing. So, my advice to you is simple. Take in as much advice as you possibly can. Read what the pros have to say. Learn from it. Take notes. These are people who have been there, done that. They live and breathe this industry.

Having said that, I turn the blog over to them, starting with the very savvy Christina Brashear.

Christina Brashear, owner of Samhain Publishing.
"Write. Don't twitter, blog, or go through your closet organizing by color. Write. Dithering = no book written. No book written = no book published. No book published = no royalties! It's been my experience during these past ten years of conversing with authors that the biggest stumbling block is committing to an actual schedule. Some authors are seat-of-the--pants writers and others are careful plotters, strategically laying out every twist and turn. Either is great, as long as you remember that while you're doing what you love, you still need to commit to a writing schedule and actually write."

Agent Jennifer Schober of Spencerhill Associates has sold more than 150 books with recent sales to Mills & Boon, Harlequin, Kensington, Dorchester, Sourcebooks, HarperCollins, Ballantine and Berkley. And she’s my very patient agent.
"As you begin your journey towards publication, remember that your ‘brand’ begins as you make your first steps out into social network and the industry network—whether by blogging, contacting agents or editors, or just networking at RWA, you are creating a professional identity. Agents and editors do google potential clients, just as any other future employer does in other industries. My advice? Be as professional as you can be with your interactions on social networking sites and when conducting your business. Most of all---Let your fantastic quality work proceed you!"

Linda Ingmanson has a degree in English and has been editing for Samhain Publishing since 2006. And she’s my ultra terrific editor. (you can find Linda and the rest of the Samhain Staff on Twitter)
"Avoid making emotions into secondary characters in your story. Sometimes I see hero or heroine's emotions behaving so actively that the character seems a passive element swamped beneath the waves of his or her rampaging feelings. It's always better to get into your character's thoughts more deeply than to "go purple" and overwrite emotions. Some examples (made these up, not from real books): His heart squirmed in his chest like a rabid rat. A powerful storm of fear buffeted her. Terror threw a blanket over her head. Passion enflamed his groin like an exploding volcano.

Well, you get the idea. A little of this is okay, but, like a strong spice, a pinch goes a long way and such flowery phrasing can easily be overused. If you're in deep third person POV, your POV character probably isn't thinking things like, "Hey, my groin feels like an exploding volcano!" Tone it down -- get into your characters' heads more and avoid the cartoony descriptions.

And…

Please use contractions, especially in dialogue. And authors shouldn't keep repeating characters' names in dialogue."

Kelli Collins is the Editor-in-Chief for Ellora’s Cave Publishing. And she’s my super wonderful editor. (read her blog Redlines & Deadlines for more helpful tips)
"If you're fortunate enough to be invited to submit directly to an editor, remember that it's a privelege. You're being allowed to bypass the slush pile.

Therefore, don't take advantage of the editor's generosity. Send the book requested. If it was an open invitation to send a manuscript of your choosing, send ONE. Not four or five. And send it only when it's ready. There's nothing more frustrating than getting multiple "updated" versions. "I'm sorry, I sent the wrong version, please use this one. No wait! Use THIS one..."

Eden Bradley aka Eve Berlin is published with Harlequin Spice, Berkley Heat, Bantam/Delta, Samhain Publishing and Phaze Publishing. A number of her novels have been translated into German, Romanian, and Japanese. Eden appears regularly on Sirius Satellite’s Playboy Radio show, Night Calls. She gives some important tips on finding the right agent.
"Before you get an agent, evaluate what your goals are. It's crucial that you have some idea of where you want to go so you can communicate your needs and ask the right questions. And when searching for an agent, DO ask questions. Remember that you're interviewing them as much as they are you. You need to know if your working styles mesh. What is the agent's communication style like with his/her clients? What's their usual follow-up on submissions? Do they represent all the genres you'd like to write? Have they made sales to your target publishers? How much are they involved in a client's writing process? Do they offer editing advice? Is that something you want? Make your list of questions and don't be too shy to ask.

A good fit is important, but what that means is different for everyone. Some agents are all business, while with others you get a little warm-fuzzy. Think about what you'd like your relationship with your agent to be. Then ask around, talk to authors about their agents, Google agents, read their blogs and interviews. Go to conferences and meet them in person, if at all possible. And find the best match for you."

"It's never too late to sit down and start writing. I've known from the time I was in high school I wanted to be a writer, but real life interfered--job, kids, house. Finally, at 34, I stopped making excuses. It's a struggle to chisel out writing time, but the sacrifice is worth it when you see your characters come to life and your stories on the page. Sit down. Open up a blank document. Write."

"There's one word that I think sums up everything about this industry. Passion. And no, I'm not talking about the sex kind, well I am but that's not the only type of passion to be found in writing. Be passionate about your story and your characters. Love them completely and it'll come through in your writing, because if you don't love them no one else will.

Write, write, write, read, read, read. Both are invaluable to you as an author. With each word you write and every sentence you read you're learning your craft and improving your skills as a storyteller. You're the only voice your characters have so speak for them loud and clear."

"Write what you love."

"Write every day. And I mean, every day. Even if you delete every word you’ve written, it doesn’t matter. The story won’t leave your head by itself. Set yourself a daily word count goal (mine is 2000) and try and write that many each day. It can be a daily word count of one hundred words (and sometimes, that’s all I achieve if I’m lucky) but the very magic of forming words and sentences contributes to the addictive magic of writing your story. Accept some days forming those words and sentences will be like pulling teeth and other days will be like drowning in a flood. And again, don’t stress if you delete them all. No word written is ever wasted, even the ones you trash.

Rejection will hurt, but it will never kill you. Don’t let a rejection letter from a publisher/editor or agent stop you. Put your manuscript aside, let it sleep for a while and then see if it deserves another go. And while it’s sleeping, start your next book."

Jess Dee is published with Samhain and the author of “Ask Adam”, “Going All In” the 2009 Eppie Award winner “Three’s Company” and several other wildly popular erotic romance titles.
"Just write the story in your heart."

A New Review & A NEW Contest!!

Imagine my smiling face this morning as I woke up and found this terrific review waiting for me!

Dark Diva Reviews gives "What She Wants" 5 delightful divas and a recommended read!

Deb says: "Ms. Rainey has yet another hit on her hands with her new book What She Wants. This fun, sexy book flowed so smoothly that I didn’t realize I was at the end till I noticed it was the last page." Read the full review HERE

Lately, I've been really depressed. Haven't felt like smiling much. The kids are going back to school next week and I'm really not looking forward to it--not even a little bit. So, when I saw that review it made me feel extra good! I needed the boost! (Thank you, DEB!) I don't know what it is about this time of year, but it's definitely not my fave. Last night, as my husband and I sat out on the deck sipping a glass of wine, we talked about this problem of mine. We sort of came up with a solution. We plan to take a winter vacation. A mini one. Something to break up the monotony. Where we live winter seems to go on forever. Gray skies. Dreary, cold weather. Icy roads. No freaking end in sight! The plan? We're going to find a nice little cabin somewhere, maybe Tenn., and take off for about three days. Just go off the grid completely. Enjoy some family time, drink hot chocolate, wake up late, catch up on some reading (bringing my ereader!). Hell, I'm already looking forward to it!

On another note! Mt first release with Ellora's Cave, Ride of Her Life, is coming out next Thursday, August 26th. I'm psyched! To celebrate--early--I'm having a contest today. All you have to do is leave me a comment. Tell me all about your ideal vacation. Is it in Hawaii with a hot hunk and lots of margaritas? A toasty cabin in the Smoky Mts. with your honey and zero interruptions? Or something completely different? You tell me! Winner to be announced HERE tomorrow. The prize? One ebook from my current releases AND a copy of Ride of Her Life (once it releases, I'll foward a copy to the winner).

I want to go back on vacation!

I'm back, did you miss me? *grin* I know, I know, you didn't even notice I was missing. Where'd I go? Bar Harbor, Maine. My kids, husband and I spent last week enjoying the cool ocean breeze, eating lobster, hiking through Acadia National Park and basically just reconnecting as a family.

We all needed this break.

You know what I love about vacation? It's not the location or all the exhausting activities. It's simply getting away from all the stress of work! The phone ringing off the hook. The daily chores that pile up. Family drama. Errands! It all gets put on hold for one week out of the year as we spend time getting to know each other again. It's so easy to drift apart, isn't it? My kids are teenagers now and my husband has a pretty demanding job. Not to mention that being an author usually means spending hours and hours a day on the laptop. Even though we live in the same house it's easy to become ships passing in the night. Vacation means laughing together, sharing silly stories, not bothering with makeup, eating junk food and staying up way too lat.

Going to Bar Harbor has become our thing. This year there seemed to be several things attempting to keep us from going there. None of us were willing to admit defeat though. We were determined to make this happen. We just NEEDED to get away.

Here are a few pix!

Me and the girls...this was taken at Seawall...very cool place to watch the ocean crash against the rocks.

Rosalie's Pizza, the best pizza in Bar Harbor!

The girls acting silly. I love seeing them laughing and getting along so well. :)

Otter Cliffs, Acadia National Park...gorgeous here!

Piling our stuff into the bed & breakfast we stayed at. It was nice, if a bit cramped.

Me and Alisha attempting to stay on the rock. The breeze was awesome here.

Katilyn enjoying the scenery

Alisha loves the ocean. She could've watched the waves for hours.

The three of us. I think this is at Otter Cliffs.

the four mile hiking trail. It was supposed to be one mile. We took a wrong turn. LOL It was great fun!

Downtown Bar Harbor. We stopped to eat some ice cream and I snapped a picture.

We took a million pictures, but I don't have it in me to post them all. At any rate, a great time away with my husband and kids. :)

Also, don't forget that tomorrow my NEWEST Samhain story releases! Yay! "What She Wants" is the start of a series. Check it out here

Summer just got a whole lot hotter…

Summer Chase has already loved and lost once and she has no intention of going through that pain again. But when a hunky Camaro-driving P.I. shows up at her B & B looking for a room for the week, she sees something more than a hard-bodied guest. For the first time since her husband’s death, Summer’s sexual interest is awakening, and she’s not about to hit the snooze button!

Gage Knight is a P.I. in desperate need of a vacation. His impromptu trip to Cape May, New Jersey, seems just what he needs to relax and unwind. But when he knocks on the door of Chase’s Bed & Breakfast and comes face to face with sexy owner, Summer Chase, relaxing drops to the bottom of his to-do list. Now all he wants is a tasty Summer treat, and he plans to take his time, savoring the curvaceous beauty one inch at a time.

Question is…can she watch Gage drive off into the sunset when the week comes to an end?

Warning: This story contains a hard-as-nails, ornery, demanding, tattooed PI eager to please, a widow ready to get back to the business of living and loving, and the kind of hot summer sex that you just might want to bookmark for later.

Excerpt (adult):

Gage leaned toward her, and Summer’s heart sped up. When his lips were mere inches from hers, he murmured, “I want you. I’ve been telling myself all evening to give you a sweet kiss at your door, to leave you alone. All I can think about right now is getting inside you.”

It was now or never, Summer decided. “Kiss me, Gage, then we’ll see what happens.”

“Mmm, your wish is my command.” His lips covered hers, and Summer melted.

He was so tender and warm as he coasted his tongue over her lips. She sighed and parted for him. Taking his time, Gage slipped inside and tasted her as if he had forever. She wrapped her arms around his neck and pulled him in deeper, suddenly edgy for everything. A groan rumbled from deep inside his chest. She became aware of his warm palm against her bare flesh beneath her tank, inching upward until the caress of his thumb over her silk-covered breast had her body vibrating with need. Summer whimpered, and Gage lifted his head, his gaze zeroing in on the center console.

As they both caught their breath, Gage recovered first. “I think we’ve gone as far as we can in this car.”

Embarrassed over her hedonistic reaction to a simple kiss, Summer straightened away and smoothed down her tank with shaky fingers. “I think you’re right.”

His strong hand cupped her chin and coaxed her gaze back to his. “Second thoughts?”

Summer wanted to feel alive, to feel like a woman again. Experiencing something besides fear over her future and sadness over lost dreams wasn’t something she would pass up. “No second thoughts.”

Gage leaned over and branded her lips with his possessive heat. Just as quickly, he was out of the car and coming around to her side. Summer’s nerves vibrated. Energy pulsed through her veins. Within minutes, they were cocooned in the privacy of his suite. Her anxiety over not having had sex for the past two years welled up and threatened to consume her.

But Gage had no reservations, not if the need in his eyes and the upward tilt of his lips were any indication. He locked the door and moved toward her. As he came to stand only inches away, he murmured, “Don’t be afraid, baby.”

Hearing his deep, masculine voice, so calm and relaxed, caused her own daring confidence to surface. “I’m not afraid. Well, maybe I’m a little afraid,” Summer confirmed as she stared up at him.

He closed the space between them and took her into the warm, solid comfort of his arms. “I thought as much, but you don’t have to be. Not with me. I’m going to make you feel so damn hot.” He brushed his lips over the top of her head. The gentleness of his bare touch stirred her clear to her toes.

Summer pushed out of his arms, gripped the hem of her tank and yanked it over her head. She dropped it to the floor. Her bra went next. She left her shorts on and stood perfectly still, resisting the urge to cringe and cover herself while his dark gaze roamed greedily over her torso.

“Damn.” Gage couldn’t move, couldn’t breathe. She was perfect. She was his dream woman and then some. Her breasts were large, firm, round pillows of creamy flesh. Christ Almighty, he could get lost for a decade playing with Summer’s bountiful swells. He ached to taste her rosy-tipped nipples. Lick and bite and suck until his heart’s content.

His hand reached out of its own volition and stroked over one turgid peak. She shivered, and he was lost. He stepped forward and wrapped an arm around her lower back and drew her up against his chest, pressing and flattening her pretty tits against his T-shirt, driving himself crazy with the feel of her. As he took possession of her mouth, Gage lost all sense of calm at the sweet flavor of her lips.
He drank in her moan of excitement and licked at her full lower lip. He’d thought about tasting her everywhere. Imagined it from the moment he’d laid eyes on the tempting beauty. Now she was here, in his arms, clutching at him with eager abandonment.

Slow the fuck down. She was trusting him with something special. Something she hadn’t given another man in two long years. The thought gave him a possessive kind of pleasure. He wouldn’t disappoint her. He would stroke and play, satisfy her every which way he could think to satisfy a woman. Knowing just how snug she’d be when he entered her the first time made his cock swell painfully.

“Open for me, baby,” Gage groaned against her mouth. She did as he commanded. He took advantage, slipping into the wet warmth, tasting and swirling his tongue over and around hers, sipping at her with a kind of crazy fever that went beyond anything he’d ever felt. When she whimpered and drew her arms around his neck Gage felt the last thread on his control snap.

Keeping his lips firmly against hers, Gage bent and hooked his arm behind her knees. Lifting her into his arms, he cradled her nude upper body close. He wanted her completely bare. He wanted to see all of her, from head to toe, so he could work his tongue over her, inch by slow delectable inch.

As Gage laid her out on the quilt and broke the kiss, he snagged her gaze. The warm whiskey shade had changed once again. Now they were dark, almost the shade of milk chocolate, and he could easily drown in their unruly depths. His jaw locked against the need to rip her shorts and panties down her legs and take her. Hard. Fast. To hell with being gentle.

He smoothed his palm over his shaven head and made one last attempt to take it slow, to make it good for Summer. As he watched, she licked her lips and shifted restlessly on the bed. The taut peaks of her nipples begged to be nibbled on. Her long, dark hair, the stuff of fantasies, spread out all around her, tucked beneath and partially covering at the same time. Gage loved looking at her, but he was going to enjoy touching her even more.

What'd ya think?
And now for a few hunks! Enjoy!

What She Wants--excerpt!

Today I figured I'd give you all a look at my upcoming Samhain release, What She Wants, coming Aug 3rd!

Excerpt:

As the hostess led the way through the crowded restaurant, Summer turned back to Gage and whispered, “I really can’t think of a better beach restaurant. Their crab cakes are fantastic.”

When they reached their table, Gage held her chair for her and murmured, “I trust your expert judgment, sweetheart.”

They were seated in the covered rear garden terrace. Summer’s heart beat erratically, nearly drowning out the simple romantic beauty of the moment. It’d been so long since she’d enjoyed a meal with a member of the opposite sex in any kind of romantic way.

Though Summer had guy friends, friendship couldn’t replace her need for intimacy. Tender touches and warm kisses—she hadn’t realized how much she missed those things until Gage had shown up at her door. Sparks had flown. Being with him, even in such an innocent way as having dinner, caused Summer’s juices to stir.

“So, Summer, do you come to this restaurant often?”

“I wish, but no, I’m usually too busy.”

He leaned across the table. “You should never be too busy for fun.”

Man, he was sexy. Summer’s mind blanked as she gazed at him. In the muted light, his smooth, tan head shone. She’d never known how sexy a bald man could be until Gage. She had the urge to run her fingers over his scalp. His five o’clock shadow only added to his dark, masculine appeal. If she were bold like Tory, she’d reach out and stroke his firm jaw. Too bad she wasn’t. He was so damn good-looking, and she really wanted to touch him. All over. For hours.

“Summer?”

“Oh, yes, I think you’re exactly right,” she breathed out. Lordy, even when she’d married Seth she hadn’t been this excited. That thought gave her a momentary pang of guilt. Thinking of Seth and looking at Gage, she knew it was way past time for her to move on with her life. She’d been stagnant too long.

Seth would have never wanted her to pine away for him forever, living in the past and shoving the future further and further beyond her reach. He’d want her to move on, get through the grieving and get to the living.

With just a hint of an ornery smile playing at the corners of Gage’s lips, Summer had a feeling he was the sort of man who lived life to its fullest. Even his profession was exciting. A private eye. Scandal and intrigue. Action and danger. Yep, definitely more exciting than running a B&B. What would it be like to make love to the roguish man? He was like a juicy steak sitting on the edge of the table, and she was the puppy dying to sink her teeth into the scrumptious feast. So close. All she had to do was reach out and she’d have him in her voracious mouth.

“Hey, Summer, care to share?”

“Share?”

“You looked pretty far off there for a second.”

She waved his words away. “It doesn’t matter. Tell me, what made you choose Cape May for your vacation?”

He picked up his fork and started back on his pan-seared cod. “My aunt made it sound pretty appealing.” The fork stopped halfway to his mouth. His lips curved upward as he said, “So far, she was right on the money.”

She took a sip of her diet cola. “You talk a lot about her. Are you close to her?” When she realized he’d stopped eating, she knew she’d said something wrong. “What did I say?”

“You don’t know what happened to my parents?”

Her heart clenched at the obvious pain in his voice. “No, I’m sorry.”

“They were killed at a carryout. Some guy high on acid came in and demanded money from the clerk. The clerk gave him what he wanted, but the asshole was so far gone he started shooting. Later he told the police he’d been trying to kill the snakes. Hallucinations. Mom was shot in the chest. She died instantly. Dad was shot three times. He died on the way to the hospital. The clerk took a bullet in the arm. He survived.”

“Gage…I’m so sorry.”

He nodded. “It was years ago. I’d just graduated from college when it happened. Aunt Bev sort of stepped in and took over where mom left off. She’s been pretty great.”

“I’m glad you had her.”

“Me too. Anyway, that’s the reason I became a private investigator. I wanted to help people.”

Summer understood loss all too well. She also knew words were useless. She reached across the table and placed her hand over his. When he turned his palm up and twined his fingers with hers, the air around them changed, heated. Her comforting gesture had quickly morphed into something much more, much deeper.

Trying to act nonchalant, Summer slipped her hand from his and inquired, “So, how long have you been a PI?”

“I hung out my shingle five years ago. It was tough going at first, but now I can be choosy.”

“Do you enjoy the work?”

“I can set my own hours. I don’t have a boss breathing down my neck. The money is good. All in all, not too bad. Every job has its drawbacks, though.”

Just then the waiter came over and asked if they wanted dessert. She was about to refuse, but Gage spoke up before she could get the words out.

“What do you have in the way of chocolate?”

“Our chocolate pie is pretty popular.”

“Send us a big slice.”

“Us?”

He pushed his plate away. “I’m not eating it all by myself. You’re helping.”

Her stomach loved the idea, but her hips not so much. “Uh-uh, I can’t afford the calories.”

His gaze traveled to her chest and back up again. “A few bites of pie won’t hurt. Trust me.”

She laughed and caved. “Who am I to refuse chocolate?”

He winked. “That’s the spirit.”

***

As they drove home, Gage had to grip the steering wheel to keep his hands from reaching toward Summer. Damn, it’d been hell watching her eat the chocolate pie. The little sounds of satisfaction she made after each bite had his mind going straight to the gutter.

He took his eyes off the road long enough to see her stroking the smooth leather seat with a fingertip. Hell, Gage wanted that finger on the head of his dick. She wiggled as if attempting to get more comfortable. The movement caused her pretty breasts to jiggle beneath her beige tank top. To keep from drooling, Gage focused on the road again. When he spotted her house, he pulled into the driveway and killed the engine, then turned toward her. “We’re home.”

“Yes, we are,” she whispered.

His gaze roamed over her possessively before he leaned in and brushed his lips over hers. “Like satin. I bet you’re like that all over, aren’t you, sweetheart?”

“M-maybe you should find out for yourself.”

Could he be hearing her right? “Summer?”

“I should be playing hard to get, I know, but I want you, Gage.”

“I want you too.”

She eyed his crotch and smiled. “I sort of gathered.”

He stroked her hair, enjoying the soft strands beneath his fingers. “You go to a man’s head, sweetheart.”

“I’m glad.”

He cupped her cheek and murmured, “You’re sure?”

“Very.”

Hell, yeah.

It's a great day!!

I admit, I'm in a fantastic mood today. Lots of good things happening. Some of which I can't discuss yet...darn it. LOL

First, I want to get this out to ALL of you. I'm running a contest at Manic Readers. And there's also a giveaway going on over there. First, the contest.

I'm giving away ONE copy of Body Rush, my new Kensington Aphrodisia release. You can see more about the contest here: May Newsletter - 11 Free Books

Also, this month Manic Readers has another giveaway and I'm in on it. I'm offering up a copy of Dare Me! (Click the May Newsletter link above to learn how to enter to win).

Another thing I wanted to share. I've started a fan page on Facebook. I'm hoping to make it a fun place to chat about books, life, writing, whatever. It's not JUST about me and my books. Just wanted to clear that up now. Here's the link if you're interested: Anne Rainey Fan Page
Now, what am I sitting here staring at??? My brand new, gorgeous author copies of Body Rush. And can I just say...wow! It's so much prettier than I expected. There's just something about seeing your words in print, ya know? I'm planning to head to my mom and dad's house tomorrow to bring them a copy. I can't wait. Pretty exciting!

Okay, so besides giving away books and staring at copies of my own books, what else is going on in my usually boring life? Well, I got on the scales this morning and saw that I lost a few pounds. Yay! I've been dieting my ass off for months now and the scales have barely moved. So, it's a good feeling when you see a change. ANY change! LOL

And, I figured it would be wrong if I didn't leave you with a few hunks to drool over. So...commence with the drooling, ladies!

Matus...simply the sexiest damn man alive...holy moly!

Yeah, he's a little young. But c'mon. Look at that guy! I mean, whew!
