First "loves"

Yesterday while browsing the cheese section at my local grocery store I heard a song that goes all the way back to my thirteen year old, boy crazy childhood. I can't hear the song, End of the Road by Boys II Men without thinking of my first "love", my first major crush, a boy named Dustin. I had it BAD for this boy. I was the new girl at school when I walked into Mr. Haas social studies class. As I'm walking to find a seat I hear a voice say to me, "Cool shirt" (It was of a very popular group at the time). I turned toward the voice and my heart immediately sped. A very cute boy with blond hair and blue eyes smiled at me. It was love at first sight (or so I thought at the time). I shyly told him thank you and moved on to my seat but from then on, my seventh grade year would be spent daydreaming about Dustin. Eventually I met a few friends, one named Dee Dee and one named Amanda. Dee Dee and I were both new to town and but we quickly found out who the popular boys in school were. Dustin, John and Beau. Well of course Dee Dee fell in love with John and Amanda with Beau. We giggled about these three boy, signed our names with their last names and even made up code words for them(Amanda's heart went Beau Beau instead of bom bom). What we should have done is use those codes in the letters we wrote back and forth. One fell into the wrong boys hands and of course he had to tell Dustin, John and Beau about the girls who crushed on them. I was mortified but Dustin took it in stride. He really was one of the nicest boys. Even though he didn't return my feelings he was always very nice to me and didn't embarrass me in any way. Toward the end of the year we were having a school dance. This would have been my first dance to ever attend. My friends and I went together, none of us wanting to go with any boys since it couldn't be Dustin, John or Beau. I remember the three of us were standing by the double doors that led into the gym where the dance was held. The song End of the Road came on and we were all being dramatic thirteen year old girls bummed out because the boys we liked didn't like us. We turned to go outside when I heard someone say, "Kelley". From this point on everything happened in slow motion. I turned to see Dustin standing about ten feet away from me. He didn't say a word just held up one hand and crooked his finger to tell me to come here. I almost melted! I slowly walked toward him and he asked me to dance. I swear I don't think my heart has EVER beat as fast as it did at that minute. It was a thirteen year old girls dream come true. He walked me to the corner and we started to dance. I could FEEL my face jump up to about 200 degrees I swear. My girlfriends, crazy as they were stood by the wall and started cheering for me!!! I was more than mortified at the time to hear Amanda and Dee going "Go Kelley" while I danced with Dustin. I look back on it right now and smile. Once the song ended he thanked me for the dance and my two girlfriends immediately grabbed my hands and pulled me to the bathroom where I started to CRY like a baby while they all hugged me and giggled. Its one of my all time favorite memories. Each time I hear that song I'm that thirteen year old girl again who is in love with a boy who doesn't love me back but he's sweet enough to make my night by dancing with me. I don't know many boys that age who would do something like that. He was a special boy and deserved to be my first love. He ended up moving to Seattle our freshman year in high school. When I was a senior a girl from school who still talked to him said that he'd asked her about me. She told him I was doing good and he told her to tell me hi and that a day didn't go by that he didn't think of me. My heart melted all over again.

I can't help to wonder what ever happened to the first boy who stole my heart with his dreamy blue eyes and gentle soul. I think he'll hold a place in my heart for the rest of my life.

So, do you remember your first "love" or huge crush? What was his name? Any cute stories about him?

One of my 'first loves' turned into one of my best friends:) B teased me in gym class, and teased me about my current boyfriend. But when that guy dumped me, B found out and draped his arm over my shoulder until we passed that idiot. Of course, rumors started swirling immediately, and B caved to peer pressure for a few months (he was popular; I was not), but he eventually decided he missed my friendship and apologized for being an ass.

To this day, we've only kissed on the cheek, but lots of hugs and fond memories of our HS days.

Oh...and even though we never dated, we still came in 2nd for 'Cutest Couple' in our Senior Poll.

So yours tops mine big time! I never did get to dance with B (sigh...)

Kelley, that is a fabulous glimpse into your childhood. =) How sweet!

I have two of those special guys from my high school days and now thanks to facebook have reconnected to them both....which is so cool to know what they are up to after more than a decade!

My mind is jumbled with tons of thoughts and memories, but one of my most memorable is my 16th birthday, Pat and I had been dating for about 8 months...it wasn't serious, serious but it was fun, we never fought or had disagreements...great youthful relationship. So on my 16th birthday he picked me up and we went to his house for dinner, he had set up a fabulous table for dinner. He is filipino and his house had these paper covered doors and windows...so cool. Anyway, our table was set up and we sat on the floor, some asian influenced music in the background, his cousin and brother were our waiters. They brought us salad, salmon and white rice and then lemon cake (my favorite)then he scooted over to my side of the table and took out a ring box, inside was a silly little ring from a quarter machine and said, I know we really won't ever get married, but I want to be the first person to ask for your hand in marriage. I said yes...and we were "engaged" for a few more months. Nothing tragic ended our relationship but we drifted apart and went our seperate ways (ok I'll admit, I broke his heart). I'll cherish that memory forever though.

p.s. I still have the quarter ring.

Ahhhh. That's the sweetest story Kell and what a NICE boy. My first love was Tommy who lived in a town not far from mine. He was soooo gorgeous. Tall, Italian and had this low, low voice and a gentle heart. He seemed to show up EVERYWHERE I was, even to our high school basketball games (I was a cheerleader). I couldn't figure why he would come to our games since he went to school somewhere else. The girls all said they thought he "liked" me and I was...uh, uh. No WAY, He's gorgeous. I was seriously crushing. Ended up going to a New Years Eve dance with a bunch of friends...very dressy thing and at midnight he grabbed me and kissed me. And KEPT kissing me. We dated for a couple of years and I loved him. Every time he picked me up for a date, his eyes got big like I was the prettiest thing he'd ever seen.

He was beautiful. About ten years ago, I learned he'd been killed in a car wreck leaving behind a wife and two kids. Very sad. I'll always love him. I cried when I heard the news.

My first crush was on a Senior, when I was a lowly Frosh. He encouraged me when I decided to join the marching band; he hugged me every time he saw me (if I was lucky, it was 3 times a week!), be it at Sunday School, Youth Group, Bible Study, or even during football and basketball season (he was in Marching Band and Pep Band). I even have some great shots of him on Pajama Night at one of the basketball games:) And on my birthday, he bought me a candy bar!

The funny thing was, four years later I ran into him again and it was a 'what did I ever see in him' moment? The feelings which I swore would last until I graduated HS were long gone...

kenzie that is hilarious. I have one or two of those memories as well. LOL!!!

What a great story, Kelly. Hard to top. Mine is more funny than anything. I was thirteen years old and in love with a boy named Jack. He walked me home from a aprty (we lived in a small town), kissed me goodnight on my front porch and our braces locked (I know, I know, but it really, really happened). My father, the air Force colonel, had to get up and unlock us with pliers. Eventually the first love faded but we remained good friends for eyars. He's now a happily married epdiatrician with three grown children. I'm thinking of putting him in one of my books.

Kelley Nyrae said...

Kenzie, I've been there before too!

Judith, OMG! How funny.

I had a crush on a guy named Rick. He never liked me back though. I crushed on him in the seventh grade when he came to our school. I was in love with him in the 8th, 9th and 10th grades. He was a nice guy, but he never even knew I was alive. I have no idea what happened to him. I've often wondered if he married the girl he dated in high school or what. I carved his name into a tree. I used to pretend we were married. I kept it a secret though, I was too shy to ever tell anyone.

Oh now that is just so sweet. My first love was too but not that much. He went deer hunting but came home empty handed. When said I was sorry he didn't get a deer he smiled and took my hands and said he already had one. Yep, we were 13 too.

That is such a sweet story! I love that!

It's funny you talking about first loves today. I went to our fall festival here in the town I live in (where I grew up) tonight. While I was standing in a food line, who walks by...my first love. He glanced my way but kept walking on. I thought, Oh well, he didn't notice me. A second later, he doubles back and stops to talk to me. He wasn't for sure it was me the first time. It was so nice to see him and brought back many memories of our time together. I hadn't seen him for about 10 years.

Kelley Nyrae said...

Anne, I had long crushes like you too. After Dustin left it was Beau.

Barbara, thats cute!

Abigale, Thanks for stopping by 3WW! Glad you enjoyed the story.

Barb, how neat that you got to see him and talk to him again.

I can't really remember my first crush. Is that weird or what?

The only one I can kind of remember was during my freshman year. A guy named Bob, a Junior, asked me out. (Oooh a Junior and a Freshman, I was moving up in the world!) and so we were bf/gf for about a week or so until my parents found out and put the kibosh on it. They thought I was still too young to date.

While I was going out with this guy though, I thought that his best friend John was a lot cuter and secretly crushed on John! I never told John about it though. Nothing ever came of it. At the end of that school year, my family moved to a different city and I never saw any of them again.
