Celebrating our girlfriends

People often ask writers how they get their ideas. It's a question very hard to answer because the truth is it varies for each book. Anything can spark an idea. My Friday's at Luciano's series was born because I wanted to tell not only heartfelt and funny love stories but also wanted to highlight one of the most sacred kinds of relationship, close girlfriends.

My series started with three women, Kaylee the responsible one, Tabby the one who wants nothing more than to have her happily ever after, and Brianna the wild child. The girls are each very different, but they compliment one another. They're more than just friends they're sisters. They laugh together, cry together, and even tell each other when they're being foolish. No holds barred, honest and blunt but each girl knows that it comes from love.

I love stories like that. It's so hard to find those people out there who will love and support you no matter what. Who know when you need to laugh and can always make you do it. Who know when you need to cry and will be there. Who know when you need cheese cake and a bottle of tequila and show up with the shopping bag in their hand after calling in sick to work. Who knows when someone breaks your heart and reverts back to being 16 and prank calls your ex at all hours of the night. Love that. There's nothing like that kind of friendship.

Kaylee, Tabby and Brianna are like that. They spend every Friday night together for girls night out and in book one, when they know Kaylee needs to loosen up and go for Luciano, her girls are the ones who give her the push she needs (Luciano takes over quite nicely from there).

I really don't think there's anything more special than that kind of relationship. It's not easy. I think in some ways society plays women to be jealous of one another. And lets admit it, sometimes we are our own worst enemy as well, but when you find that soul sister everything falls into place. Men are GREAT but there are some things we just need our girlfriends for.

What are some of your favorite romances that have close girlfriends in them? Know any good books where the characters friendship grows throughout the series? What about in real life, lets talk about what our girlfriends mean to us.

Ah, I love this post. Thing is it's not all about MEN for women. Women have to face tough things and deal with so many little and BIG things sometimes with no support and finding a girlfriend or two or three is essential. We keep things together when we're swollen with pregnancy, when we're overworked, when we're sick as a dog. So friends who have been there are a MUST.

I love the way Nora Roberts builds the female friendships in her books and I'll just say straight out this is my favorite thing about her work. Sure the love interest is important but the friendships with "the girls" is always the best! She actually has too many of these series to mention but I'll give you some of my favorites. Daring to Dream, Holding the Dream and Finding the Dream was great. Montana Sky. Three Sisters Island series. Those were all great in emphasizing how important our female friendships are.

Nora's Key trilogy is like that too!

My series is sort of that way. The girls meet in book #1 and learn to share a room; book #2 focuses mainly on two more, but by book #3, you really begin to see the relationship between the six girls take off. I was crying at the end of #6 when I had to 'graduate' four of them!

You took the words out of my mouth, Reg.

Molly, What's your series called?

I loved Nora Roberts stories, but also Lori Foster had a few series with girlfriends in them that I loved too. :)

I've never had very many close girlfriends. When I read I get to have that and it makes it that much more special to me.

Hi Kelley, I totally agree!! There is nothing like a relationship with girlfriends. There are some things you can only tell your girlfriends. I love to read about these relationships in books. I often include these types of interactions in my books and mirror them on the events that my girlfriends and I have been through. Not to mention, the fact that we all love to read romance and pass along a series to each other to read all the time.

Great blog!
