Faceoff: Myspace VS. Facebook

I'm not here to badmouth either Facebook or Myspace but I do have a confession to make. I HATE my Facebook account. I do. I rarely go there because...and maybe it's just me but I find Facebook completely confusing and not very user friendly. I'd heard so many wonderful things about Facebook, and I admit they do have some really cool features like sending information out to all your friends (besides the Myspace bulletin feature) instead of one by one. I have friends who use the feature for their newsletter and they seem to really love it, but me, I get so damn frustrated when I go to the site that I don't take the time to even figure out how to do it.

On the other hand, I'm completely love myspace. I'm addicted. I go numerous times a day, promo there, send comments, bulletins, you name it. The sight flows well to me. It's completely user friendly, IMO. Plus, I love how you can customize your page. Mine is an individual to me, Kelley Nyrae, myspace page and I love it.

What about you? Facebook or Myspace? What are your favorite features?

I must admit to having accounts at both sites and I pretty much hate them both. But that's the only way certain friends/relatives bother to communicate with me. *rolls eyes* I'm much more of a Livejournal fan. I like the blogs rather than all the extra apps that the other sites have.

I find the little applications annoying on facebook and now I see myspace has added them. Still trying to figure out how it all works. I have both myspace and facebook and I have to say, I enjoy myspace better. It's just more fun!

Maybe I'm still just getting used to facebook. I don't know. Yesterday, I was trying to do a SIMPLE thing. An hour later I was ready to bang my head on the keyboard. I COULDN'T easily change my profile pic. Frustrating. FInally I just sat there and moved my cursor around...BOOM there it was. All I had to do was hover over the pic and the change deal came up. The whole exercise make me crazy!

The way I look at this is it's free promotion and I'm all about FREE. lol.

I'm doing twitter too but I don't get it. What's the big deal?

I like Facebook because I can quickly post info. Myspace I rarely frequent, but use it for email or bulletins.

I also ignore the applications, except for a few FB ones from friends. But I only send them back; I don't send out any to others.

JMHO...

I used to love myspace and hated facebook, but once I got the hang of facebook I realized I liked it better. I never really made 'friends' on myspace, but with facebook I have. And when I go to visit someone's facebook page it loads fast, and there's no annoying music. Some of those myspace pages take so long to load I give up and leave.

I personally think both have their uses though, esp. for an author. A free way to get your books out to readers? How can you possibly go wrong?

I like blogs too, Jackie but for talking, I prefer myspace.

Reg, those applications drive me crazy!! I never use them.

Molly, its funny how everything is different to everyone. I find I post info more quickly to myspace than Facebook. lol

Anne, that's exactly why I keep both. Can't go wrong with free promo and networking!

I'm in the same boat as you Kelly! I absolutely loathe Facebook. It practically puts me to sleep. And I agree with you regarding the user friendliness of the site. It limits you to the types of friends you can since you're not in their network (or maybe I don't understand how to get out of network)

At times I love myspace because of all the really neat people I've met from so many diverse backgrounds. But then it also gets on my nerves because promoting yourself and your books on their can be really time consuming:)

I can't stand any of them. Truthfully, it's just more work for a writer to do. And the virus' ugh, you never know.
I can't figure any of it out!

Koko, I totally agree.

Mary, it is a lot of work but i think it pays off with sales.

I have accounts with both sites, but prefer my FB page. For some reason, I 'get it' on FB. I needed my neighbor's 12yr to help me with the layouts and music for Myspace. *sigh* Oh to have stayed awake in computer class! LOL

I have to say that as far as I can tell, sales have not increased from use of either site. I deleted my facebook and am considering doing the same for myspace. Both of them are a pain in the behind and require far more time than I'm willing to give them. I also think that the average age of people on facebook is too young for the type of books I write. I wish there was a social network for the 35+ people.

Sorry, cannot get into pets, flowers, and all that other junk. I have a bunch of plants on the table next to my desk and a cat that sleeps on my feet. Enough is enough.

I'm a myspace lover.

It's way more customizable, and well . . . I gotta be me.

LOL

I hated facebook at first, still like MySpace better just cause I've been using it longer probably but Facebook posts go so much faster and I can do more with Facebook. I suck at using either of them though. My favorite thing is Twitter quick, easy, and to the point

I like them both, and use them both, but Facebook I am finding is a little more casual and friendly, while Myspace is more of a second website.

And I have to admit, that I've been contacted by readers on both forums, so I wouldn't give up either one for just the other.

Kelly, I go out to my MySpace page maybe once a week, at the most. I love Facebook. I'm not to wild about their new format but I'm getting more used to it. I have connected with alot of people I went to high school and college with that I had lost contact with. I also like the IM feature on Facebook. I talk to alot of my HS friends on there. It's like a little reunion without having to pay out the money and get all dressed up. ; -)

It's funny how different the opinions are on the same sites. Maybe there is something I just don't "get" about Facebook.

I love My Space. I have three of them - one for me and one for two of my characters. I have quite a lot of 'friends' and although I'm not sure whether I've had many sales it's certainly helped in putting my name out there. As a UK author I need as many promo opportunities as I can get! I do have a Facebook account, everyone keeps saying how great it is but personally I can't seem to get into it, so I hardly ever use it. One day when I have time I might fiddle and see what I can do with it. My three My Spaces took far to long to set up, but that's probably because I love playing with graphics and wanted to personalise them as much as possible. Now they're done, I go in two or three times a week to accept friends (I find I don't need to request friends too often now, the more you have, the more they seem to generate)reply to messages and send the odd Birthday greeting, etc. I keep a copy of all the graphic codes I use as a Word document, so I only have to cut and paste from my own list. Again this took time setting up, but has paid off by being such a time saver now, I just look for the title of the graphic I want instead of seaching through My Space graphic sites.

I find Twitter very handy for sending out seasonal greetings, news items, book releases etc, but I don't use it to give blow by blow accounts of my daily grind! :)

It's very much like My Space to look at but easier to use if you're not keen on fiddiling around. The age group may actually be a bit higher than you'd like, it seems to be a lot of retired ladies with plenty of time to chat and post messages - but they're a lovely group and although there are quite a few authors on the site, I think it's a good place to gather interest in your books, since it's not just authors promoting other authors on the scale of My Space. I don't interact there nearly as much as I should, but I do like the site and you don't have many problems with spam or viruses there.
