Season of Giving

First I wanted to announce one more time that Valerie in Germany won my first contest. Please email me at writer madison scott (AT) yahoo (DOT) com

I want to talk about gifts today. Kids are making their lists for Santa. Husbands and wives are picking out that special something for one another. I am not a big shopper, but I LOVE Christmas shopping. I can't help but imagine the look on my girls faces when they open them. The thank you kiss from my husband or the tears from the grandparents (I'm known for sentimental grandparent gifts, lol).

We're having a struggle in the house this year because my oldest wants a puppy. Like BAD. My hubby and I just aren't on board with it right now. It's a big responsibility and we're not sure we're ready yet. It's a tough one. We don't want Santa to disappoint, but I'm just not sure the Scott family can handle another member right now.

I'm good at remembering gifts of the past. My most memorable Christmas gift I've been giving was from my husband. We'd only been together ONE month. We were only teenagers and he got me the cutest ring... a promise ring. Everyone thought we were crazy. "You've only been together a month!" "Teen relationships never work out!" But twelve years later, the promise ring has been replaced with a wedding ring, we're still going strong and I still have that promise ring. It's too small to wear, but it's tucked away in my jewelry box and I still pull it out from time to time to look at it.

What was the most memorable Christmas gift you've given or received?

I'll randomly draw one winner from today's commenters who will win their choice of one of my ebooks. Click HERE for a list of my books!

As a teenager, it was either my stereo or stuffed tiger.

In my 20's it was my first apartment furnishings.

In my 30's, it wasn't so much a gift I received; we were in a financial position to help out relatives, and that was the best 'gift', to see the joy on their kids' faces.

And now I'm in my 40's, and I can honestly say it's a hot, steamy shower at my mom's house! (Our shower is in the basement, and it's cold down there in the winter!)

Nothing compares to the handmade stuff my 6 y/o brings home from school. I've gotten many gifts, many cost a pretty penny, but those cards with the handwriting zigzagging all over the palce never fails to make me cry.

The most memorable is definitely from my childhood, since as you get older you get more practical gifts. What was my favorite was Wheelchair Barbie. As a quadriplegic I hated that none of my dolls looked like me, so I was thrilled when Wheelchair Barbie came out--even though her body measurements were still too perfect.

Molly, love your gifts. A lot of the time its the gifts you give that are the most memorable.

Avril,
I agree! I love the stuff my kids make me. My oldest is in first grade so last year was the first time she came home with stuff. We still have it. This year they had a little store at school and we sent her with money to buy everyone gifts. Everything in the store was under 5 dollars. I loved seeing the things she picked out for her grandparents, sister and dad.

This is actually easy to decide on the puppy. Do you like your furniture? Did you plan to upgrade your furniture in the next ten years? Do you like your carpet and floors? Yes? Then don't get a puppy! *lol*

I didn't give or receive this gift but it has stood the test of time as the best gift ever. My family didn't have a whole lot of money so my parents got creative. They went to a local refridgerator dealer (back when towns still had that) and asked if they could have a box that was still in one piece. They explained to the owner why and he helped to find one. My father cut windows and a door and it was my brother's all time favorite gift.

Hi,

Here is Valerie in Germany!!!

Sorry, just saw the notice. I've sent an email.

My boss gave me a great gift and she gave me the same this year.

A Ayuveda massage.....and it was soooo good and I can't wait to get another one. I tell you...it's like shedding 10 years, after the massage, every wrinkle in my face was gone!!!!

Sigh, wish I could afford one every week.

The best gift I gave was to my twin girls it was a gold pendent that broke in half one side said big sister the other side said little sister they were young when I gave it to them and they always lost there stuff I was afraid they would lose it but I guess the pendents meant a lot to my girls because they still have them to this day and they just turn 20.

One of our recent memorable gifts was a book my middle one made for us--it detailed one of our family "adventures" and it was really cute and fun to see what she loved and remembered about that family time! And of course, the illustrations were too much ;)

I think the most memorable Christmas gift I've received would have to be when my dad took me to go shopping for a truck. He's always believed in earning your way through everything, so I knew that I would be the one to pay, but he co-signed and paid the down payment. And I'm still driving it!

I have two. My dad gave me my first pair of diamond earings. He was so happy and proud of himself. They were the smallest diamonds I had ever seen but hey I was in the 6th grade. It just made me a million times happier that he was so excited. It was cute.

My second was my boyfriend we had been dating a whole 7 months and he got me a big teddy bear and I named it after him. I slept with that thing everynight. We have been together 15 years and married 10 of those years. That poor bear has been kidnapped by all three of my boys at one time or another. I heard those same things teen love never last. But we are still married and happy with three boys.

Oh I soooo remember those sweet promise rings. I had one too although I didn't actually MARRY HIM. LOL. One of those high school things that passed quickly. A puppy. I'm a sucker for puppies but that sure is a big commitment. siiiigh.Tough decision here.

My most memorable Christmas gift was a car.

I love your promise ring story, hon. How sweet to know it started out as teens and is still going strong.

Desi, the earring and the teddy bear are both very cute stories!

Reg, my hubby was the first boy I was ever serious about and definitely the first one ever serious about me. After we got together he would tell me stories about times he liked me before hand. Explain outfits I wore to certain parties :)

Madison Scott said...

Tess,
Thank you! I'm a very lucky girl.

Madison Scott said...

Zina,
Love that you still have it!

One that sticks out is the boom box my oldest brother gave me for Christmas. He'd come home on leave for the holidays and to me that was the best gift right there, but when he opened his suitcase and I saw that big shiny boom box and he said it was mine, I was speechless.

My brothers aren't known for big gestures and they have to be half-dead before they'll tell you they love you. To their way of thinking you should already know that, lol.

So, when I saw that boom box I knew Tom cared. I knew he'd missed me the way I'd missed him. It was a special Christmas for me. :)
